long time to access my router

I have been debuging why it takes a long time to access my router. I am using win2Kpro and when I open the web page to access my Linksys 8 port router, it takes about 2 minutes for the javascript log-in prompt to appear, afterwhich I can instantly log-in to the router.

I at first thought this to be an IE 5.5SP2 issue, but I can instantly access the router from win98 boxes on the network that are running IE5.01SP2 or IE 5.5SP2. Browser configs and settings are identical in all browsers.

Therefore I deem this solely a win2k issue. This 2 minute delay occurs on some other web sites as well. For instance, it occurs when logging in to DriverGuide.com. I am thinking that maybe win2k is seeking a service that I have disabled or set to manual and that it takes that long to get the service started?

FYI, this is a fairly new install of win2k, about two weeks. I always am logged on as admin and I have not set any policies. This box is on a network with 4 other win98 systems and I have no server-type services running, it is used as a workstation. I can restart and boot into win98 and instantly access the router with no delays.

Also, this delay in accessing the router was present from the moment I first booted into win2k, before any system changes were made.

I am certain that the router is in no way responsible for this condition, based on the research and testing I have done.

    Any ideas?

TonyT - nothing solid springs immediately to mind. But a couple of thoughts. These options are all what I see on IE6 but I think the same ones are present in all the 5.x versions.

If you have Java Logging turned on, you should be able to see in detail what is happening with any issues there.

I'd also try turning script debugging on as well as display script errors while trying to pin this issue down.

And just in case you have a router with older code, you might try unchecking HTTP 1.1 to see if maybe your router wants HTTP 1.0.

None of this would explain why the same version behaves differently on 9X and 2K but might help you pin down the problem.

Otherwise, try starting services one at a time to see if any help the speed. Some will refuse to start but that will pretty well say they aren't the problem here. I can't think of any that will start that would cause you problems.

If no help there, how about loading IE6 to see if it behaves better. If so and unless you have reasons for not wanting it, you could just keep it and not worry about the cause of the original problem.

    Thanks.
I really don't want IE6 just yet an ddo not believe the browser has anything to do w/ the issue.

Here's some more that I discovered:

In viewing Event Viewer, I noticed these errors, which were not as a result of me actively doing anything with any application, they occurrred in the background:

    error #1
DCOM got error "The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. " attempting to start the service EventSystem with arguments " " in order to run the server:
    {1BE1F766-5536-11D1-B726-00C04FB926AF}

    error#2
The Remote Access Connection Manager service depends on the Telephony service which failed to start because of the following error: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it

I have Remote Access disabled. This leads me to believe that some progranm is trying to connect somewhere and it fails. I have done afull virus scan and am clean. Sometimes, I see a DHCP error saying that the IP address failed to refresh and the system received a sync ack from the router, but the IP is still working and I never lose network or internet connections. Baffled...

You don't happen to have additional network protocols other than TCP/IP running, do you?

We used to have slowups connecting with DUN (in the OLD win95 days) if additional protocols other than TCP/IP were allowed. Could this happen today?

    Good Luck

The only other protocol is NetBeui. TCP is not bound to Client for MS Networks or and is not bound to File & Print Sharing. NetBeui is used for File & Print Sharing.
