I was downloading a program from eBay when it stopped with a windows installer error. Now, everytime I start a program that has been installed and working for years, the windows installer starts up. Sometimes the program will start after the installer shuts down and some times it won't. I cannot install any new programs. I get an error message that windows installer is corrupt and it needs to be reinstalled.
I downloaded the msiexec.exe file from MS and ran the run line command but it did not work. I removed all entries from the registry with msiexec.exe and from WINNT\system folder and then reinstalled again. Still it won't work.

The windows installer needs to be re-installed.
Any body know how to get this thing to work again without doing a complete reinstall?

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

    Take a peek at:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Installer

When an install crashes, there is usually an "install or current install" type entry that needs to be zapped.

I check and there is no "installer" in Microsoft.

this is what worked for me, maybe it will for you too.
i think what you want is the InstMsiW.exe file from the mister softee site .

the key seemed to be that i disabled the Installer Service, then deleted every msiexec.exe, msi.dll and msihnd.dll file on my hd....

then i ran the InstMsiW.exe file

    hth

    :)
