    Appreciate some assistance.

Trying to help a friend who has a Norton Protected Recycle Bin.

In the recycle bin he has the Norton Icon, and also some files from a download that went bad.

When he tries to right click the files to delete them, he cannot.

Any suggestions as to how he can get rid of these downloaded files?

    FZWG,
Restart in DOS mode, or boot from a floppy ERU disk.
    At the prompt, type
    del C:\recycled

    reboot
Windows will make a new, empty bin for you.
    regards

May not be quite that easy with Norton Protection. Open up Norton and within Utilities from the main screen, go to options, remove Norton Protection, empty protected files, reactivate Norton Protection and you should be done.

    ;)

    Thanks for the replies.

Norton Protection kinda throws a monkey wrench into the issue, but a brand new Recycle Bin recreated with the following approach from MS-DOS solved the problem:

    Start>Shutdown>Restart in MS-DOS
    at the prompt, entered:
    cd\ (enter)
    deltree recycled (enter)
    exit (enter)

Guess the folder itself became corrupted, so had to delete the 'Recycled' folder in W98SE.

hmm...You mean to say you were actually able to Deltree the Recycled folder without changing its protective attributes!! That may say something about how it became corupted. :D

Normally you would have to do:

    attrib -r -s -h c:\recycled
    deltree c:\recycled

    To get rid of it.

    Zephyr,

The Symantec troubleshoot guidance for the Norton Protected Recycle Bin allows for deleting the contents of the Recycle folder. Actually, it instructs to delete the actual foder.

That's not what you said though. You said you deleted it via:

Normally that won't cut the mustard since the folder is protected. I was just curious as to how you danced around that.

    Zephyr,

There is no doubt on my mind that you know more DOS than I do.

All I know is that the above was done, and it worked.

Other than that, I don't get hung up on the trivia...:D

Actually I know little or nothing about anything but I think MicroSoft would be interested in your method since they think it's not possible to do it your way. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=136517

Granted, they're not too smart either. :D

I have no quarrel with your winning ways but just wanted to clarify it in case someone else tries it that way and can't pull it off they may understand why. If Deltree can't perform a certain task, it won't render any error message so you may or may not have deleted the Recycled folder. If the problem was fixed, it may or may not have been due to you running that command.

    Enjoy the results! :D

Thanks FZWG, That does seem to fly in the face of the M$ advice but perhaps when Norton takes over the bin, it eliminates the original Recycled folder and creates its own version which operates under different rules. I'm only guessing since I don't have Norton.

I have always heard that one should disable the Norton Protected Recycle Bin before attempting any repairs so obviously doing that would return it to M$ rules.

It would seem that there is more than one way to skin this cat. Very interesting, thanks. :)

The job got done, one way or the other...:D

    Guess that's what counts.
