restarts by itself

I have a windows 2000 pro, sp 3. It will reboot itself during the night. The user is shutting down but when he returns in the morning the desktop has restarted.

Any ideas?

 

Just a thought, but is the user checking that he is selecting "Shut Down" and not "Restart "?

The selection will default to the last successful one used. If "Restart" was selected some time ago, perhaps after installing software or whatever, it will stay there until changed to "Shut down "

 

I thought about that. THe user seems to know what they are doing and they swears that they are shutting down. Would anything else cause it to reboot?

 

Does the bios have the ability to wakeup on LAN request?

 

I had same problems with Intel Pro 100 NIC and Windows 2000. Found patches and workaround at Intel website.

 

Along with the LAn wake thing . If you have modem with your phone line in it and it can wake on ring. then when your phone rings while your away the system will boot.
