My son has reformatted the hard drive on one of our PCs. My Windows ME disk is an upgrade disk, and it searches for an earlier version of Windows when I try to install it.

Does anyone know a way around this problem?

Just insert the install disk that you got with the original system on your computer when it asks for proof. If you don't have that, perhaps you can borrow one from a good friend.

    Good luck. :)

Unforunately, I don't have the disk that originally came with the computer, as it is a number of years old. But I will look into borrowing one from a friend. Thanks

You just need to find a full version Windows 95 or 98 CD somewhere. When it asks you to insert the disk, all it does is verify that you have it and that you're eligible to use the upgrade CD. It will just read it for a few seconds then spit it back out.

For future reference, Windows ME comes with a system restore. I'd suggest creating a restore point after you get everything just how you want it so you won't have to reformat next time. And keep your son away from your computer :)

    Windows 98 CD

I have a few old win 98cds around. I can mail you one if you e-mail me at weazzor@optonline.net. This will solve your problem.
