    Hi, This is Chris.

I have had to modify this message becouse believe it or not, using a certain product name is causing thing to close down as detailed below.

I appears that using the name of the well known Anti Virus program that rymes with "Morton" closes Internet Explorer and logs me off the net! Three times this has happened so I'm trying this name-changed version.

The problem I am experiencing is that anything connected with Morton products seem to be doing strange things. Firstly, Morton SystemWorks and Anti-Virus (2001) have disappeared from my desktop. I have tried to re-install them but as soon as the process starts, the setup screens simply vanish. Also, if I open Windows Explorer and go to the Morton folder, Explorer itself closes down. I have used Morton's own web-based checking service and a second web-based checker and both found nothing wrong. Also, my firewall (Sygate) appears to close down shortly after opening although Morton's checking states that the firewall is operating - it's just not visible.

My greatest problem is that, althiugh the programmes may well be running, I cannot use the virus update feature since that also begins to run then vanishes!

Welcome to the board. This sounds like you are infected. Try an online scan..

    HouseCall

I dont have a link to a trojan scanner, but someone else will chime in.

It does read like a Possible Virus infection.

Some of them do attack, disable or other wise destory the AV program.

If you have Morton Internet Security is is more than likely disabled also.

Also, my firwall (Sygate) appears to close down shortly after opening although Morton's checking states that the firewall is operating

    Correction.

Aparently Sygate firewall has been effected also.

here is another site for online virus scans:
    www.symantec.com/securitycheck
    you may recognize this one.

For what it is worth, there are a lot of problems with this AV, so I usually counsel changing to a decent vehicle; such as,
eTrust from Computer Associates.. costs the same but does not ***** up Windows... does a good job and updates at least once daily.

I went and purchased Norton Anti Virus 2003 which updates new virus checkers as they are created. I don't know if it will help you though. I just thought i'd mention it.

Thanks for the replys so far.

Thank you for the prompt response to my problem. I have scanned using the online facility offered by Symantec - Nothing found. I also tried to download some alternative checking software. However, even trying to do this closed the browser window. It seems that anything with certain key words causes the problem to occure.

I'll keep trying to solve it!

    Many thanks,

    Chris

Just in case, try an online scan with Housecall to get a second opinion.

I'd also pass this one along to Symantec Tech Support since it is unusual and does seem to be related to their AV product.

Chris.......I looked on the symantec website and found this info for you. It describes what issues you are having and describes the steps to correct it. Or at least make a good attempt at it. Go to this url and it tells you what to do.

    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...b55a18acd44d00c388256bbb005ac177?OpenDocument

you may have to write this down to go to the website. I don't know if it's clickable in here.

You do have one of several virus's though according to them. Let me know if this helps you.

Newt..... Symantec doesn't support their 2001 software any longer. You have to use the Knowledge base which is where the url I gave to chris is from. Hopefully that will solve her problem.

Thanks Bass (whole thing is just too dang long LOL).

I had to update for Win2K to 2002 and lost track of what they are still supporting. Good information to have.

    Thanks!

    Hi TrophyBassmaster and everyone,

I have a solution to my "Strange Software Problem ". I followed your link to Symantec site and downloaded the bug killers for "Klez" and "Bugbear ". I ran them both as described and the problem has dissapeared. Strangely, neitherkiller claimed to have found anything but One of them clearly did work. I have since successfully downloaded virus updates and everything seems back to normal.

Many, many thanks for the support offered by all of you.

    Chris.

What a long, streange trip it's been.... no doubt. Have you thought about where you caught the bug or bugs? I'd be leary, and careful at least in replacing anything backed up before the fix. If you're certain of a cured system, I'd replace or renew my backup stuff... Just a thought. Congratulations on solving your unusual acting windows.
