My nephews PC came pre-loaded with ME and a card to get the XP upgrade free. Can anyone advise me what is the benefit of upgrading and if (as I see from the ME forum) it is more stable than ME?

Well, XP seems alot more stable than 9*/ME. I like it alot better, it's based on the NT kernal rather than the 95 kernal. It does however seem to be popular that ~if~ you're going to upgrade, do a fresh install. I do agree with that, because I've tried it both ways, and always been happier with a clean install.... just seems to me that when you upgrade, you always have something that doesn't like something else.
Oh and another thing..... within 30 days of loading, you must activate XP..... not register, activate. Be sure you give it a week or two before doing this... not because you want to make Bill Gates wait, but so you can make sure that it is working right etc..... just saves you alot of hassle.
    Good Luck! :D

In my opinion your nephew is in a precarious situation. When purchasing a new machine there is an implied and expressed warranty that is enforceable (exceptions), and the vendors responsibility to correct or adjust any malfunctions within a given period of time for the system as sold and doesn't include modifications.

With an XP upgrade, and your installation of this O/S may be problematic, and to avoid conflict with the vendor, it is my opinion the vendor should install and stand behind their product.
