Hi all, had a previous post on 95 section with an ethernet install problem...long story. I have scrapped 95 as it was a dead loss and have installed 98 SE. All went well untill it came to the end of the install and when getting hardware info and loading drivers etc..it prompted me to install the CD as a file was missing. I couldn't find it so I "skipped file" and there were loads missing.
I've done a search on the CD on another PC to find they really are not on the CD.
It would appear all files are driver related (here we go again) and although I can get the PC up, I cant install my ethernet card as these vital files(.exe's, .sam's....various..) aren't available...
    ...pls help...

    Hi nhal1uk
I'm at a loss, as to what to suggest, except to fdisk, format, and put the operating system on cleanly?

Setting up a LAN is a nightmare - something MS completely failed
to automate - adapters, clients, protocols - you can work all day
and all night and just go round in circles.
Especially if a LAN card is belly up or not the same as the next one.
Windows doesn't even read the LAN card specs correctly.
To save yourself a lot of grief, buy new LAN cards of the same make, try to get them in the right (?) slots on the mobo, load the same drivers, and keep your fingers crossed.
I remember Billy saying anno 2001 that home networks were a thing of the future, to be pushed and supported by MS.
Nothing has been done for Win98 and I do not know if later OS are better - I hope so, as even a simple Win95/98/ME/2000 LAN is a catastrophy to try to get up and running.
    good luck

    update..

well thanks for the suggestions...have already started from scratch and lo-and-bohold it was my fault for not selecting "typical install "...so the 98 is up and running although have a problem with the screen size. It wont budge from the min setting of 640x640 or thereabouts...not sure..are ideas welcome.
As for the network issue Merlin, i have these two PC's, both Realtek eth cards, crossover connection cable, the diags for the card are ok on the 98. Cant get the diag to run on 2k machine but probably ok as windows has it....will play with it some more..
if you have any tips for me, go ahead as this is new territory for me. I thought I was getting on for expert user.....how wrong I was!!!

Sorry. I've not nearly enough coffee in me.
Do you know how to update your drivers? Your display adapter in particular?

    drivers

Yes I do know how to update drivers,but.....for one there are no drivers on the web available (at least I haven't found them yet), and as it happens the 98 picked up the screen and installed the right ones in the first place. My attempt at fixing the problem firstly was to delete them and tell 98 it was just a generic screen, as the resolution was adjustable when it had 95 on it. So not sure why even with compaq drivers it won't let me move the slider...any thoughts now all that has been explained??

    still no-where

All I would like is for some one to tell me what combination of monitor and display adapter to use so I can get at least 800x600 resolution and 256 colours (or better). I have tried all combinations just about and getting sick of it. Installing a generic monitor with super VGa adapter allows me to change the slider...on boot it tells me its not playing and goes back to 640x480.......pls someone recomend a setting you use for a 14 in mon..
