No password authentification dialog box in IE6

My son is having a problem with IE6 SP1 at college. His browser does not display a dialog box that asks for a user name and password that certain sites require. His college professor sent his class of 300 a link to a site where he posts the course syllabus etc. Everyone except my son clicks the link to go to the site and a dialog box pops up asking for a User Name and Password. My son's computer never gets the dialog box so he can't get into the site. He even sent me the link and my home computer and each of 4 office computers all get the dialog box. His computer is virtually identical to mine. WindowsXP Professional. I sent him a link to another site that I know of that also causes a dialog box to pop up asking for a user name and password and he doesn't get it there either. We played around with a bunch of IE6 settings to no avail. His computer behaves as if Tools|Internet Options|Security Tab|Custom Level|User Authentication Logon| was set to Anonymous Logon. It is, however, set correctly to Automatic Logon in Intranet Only.
How do I get his computer to get the dialog box.

No luck, yet getting my son's browser to function properly and get the dialog box I referred to in my original post. I figured I would have to wait till he comes home from college this summer and mess around with it.
I did find a temporary work-around for the problem. I was able to create a link to the site for him that includes the username and password that he would normally have to type into the missing dialog box. For example. say the site is www.daizy.com that requires a username and password. I just created a link for him like this:
http://usernameassword@daizy.com
That gets him into the site that otherwise he has no access to.

If you know how to get his browser to work properly I'd sure appreciate the info.

For some reason the example of the link I gave got messed up and a smiley face go inserted. I will try again:

Maybe if you posted the web address we could try changing some settings in IE6 to get the same result (in other words, if we initially get the logon window adjust settings until we don't therefore determining what is causing it not to work).

What settings did you already try changing? Enabling cookies?
Maybe a firewall is causing the problem.

When I click on that link I get the dialog box asking for a User Name and Password. His computer only gets the screen you see if you click on the cancel button in the dialog box. He is on a college network in the dorm. They all have high speed internet connection. His is the only computer that has this problem.
I was able to duplicate his exact problem on my computer by changing Tools|Internet Options|Security Tab|Custom Level|User Authentication Logon| to Anonymous Logon. Usually that setting is set to Anonymous Logon only in Intranet Zone. When I change the setting back to Anonymous Logon only in Intranet Zone the dialog box reappears. His computer is configured correctly to Anonymous Logon only in Intranet Zone. Despite that, I had him change his setting to each choice. None of the choices solved his problem
- not even the one that says Prompt For User Name and Password.
His cookies are enabled. Accepts First Party Cookies, Block Third Party Cookies, Always Allow Session Cookies. Same as my computer.
I sent him another link to a site that I use that requires a UserName and Password to get into. He has the same problem with that site so I don't think this is specific for one particular site. I don't think he ever get that dialog box at any site that would normally present it for authentication.

 

This is a tough one. I have a feeling it might have something to do with his Network settings. Might want see what's installed there. I tried the link and I do get the logon box.

I also tried to find some help on their main page.
Is "Client for Microsoft Networks" installed on his computer?
Is it on yours?
They don't offer support for XP but do make reference to this having to be installed.

Also check to make sure javascript is enabled.

My Java is set to High Safety. I am pretty sure we went through every setting to see if anything was different comparing his computer to mine. All those settings were the same. Just the same, I will ask him about his Java setting when he gets back to school on Monday.
In the meantime, your efforts are greatly appreciated.
