    The Windows Update issue:

    Purge your browser cache (again!);
    Restore Internet Explorer's security defaults for each Zone (Tools - Internet Options - Security - Default Level);
    Restore the default options under Advanced (Tools - Internet Options - Advanced - Restore Defaults) and then check the option to "Use HTTP 1.1 though proxy connections ";
    Find and delete the WUTEMP folder;

... try using the Update page!

    The Backweb issue:

Look in MSCONFIG for any items which reference Backweb and, if found, disable 'em!

    HTH.

    Windows Update - Start-up List

My goodness ... all these posts!

Mike, I'll continue with your suggestions for now because your suggestions are the ones I started with, and I feel very comfortable "working" with you. Charles, your manual download suggestion is one well worth considering, and if all else fails, I'm going to use your suggestion. I've already worked up a list of my last downloads so I won't dupe anything. I want to exhaust all possibilities to make it work before I take the time to do it manually. Windows Update worked until 12/11/02. Somewhere, in the last 2 months, it died. I want it to work again.

I appreciate all of your time! Everyone has been so kind here, I just want to continue. Just call me the "pit bull" about making things work (in other words, I don't like to let something go). As long as you all are kind enough to hang in there with me, I'll try what you think is best. Mike, here's what you wanted. I will log in later to see what further you can do for me, and thanks again.

    Windows Update - Brett's suggestion

    Brett --

Thanks for your ideas. I tried what you suggested, and Windows Update did not work. Also, couldn't find any Backweb reference in MSCONFIG.

Mike, I'll wait for your input. I be logged in later.

I am at my office now.

See several problems in your startups and others that I need to research.

Will be back to you later this evening.

    OK Betty

In BHODemon click each item and disallow it to run. This can be turned back on, but for now turn off.

Then D/L and run the below:

    Startup control panel
    http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

This gives simple and full control of what starts at boot up. After install there will be a Startup icon in control panel.

after installed go to control paned and dbl click Startup Control panel and uncheck the following items. Remember if something don't work correctly after these are unchecked then they can be reactivated by rechecking.

I recognise all of the below except TaskPanl.exe and IPClient.exe (these are from Earthlink) from what I could find these are not nessesary but disallow them and see if anything changes. These 2 look like they have potiential to cause your problem.

    mdm.exe
    mm_tray.exe
    realsched.exe
    qttask.exe
    TaskPanl.exe
    wkcalrem.exe
    msoffice.exe
    DirectCD.exe
    IPClient.exe

Everything above will slow down the system and effect IE stability or speed especialy when this many are running at once. I would do a few and reboot and try to find the one that causes the problem.

Go here and see if you need ctfmon.exe, if not then the way to uninstall is here also.

    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=282599

There are several more that can be addressed these are the sites to research them.

    Cleaning startups
    http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startu...tartup_full.htm

    http://jeh.ne.client2.attbi.com/TechSupport/index.htm

    http://www.3feetunder.com/krick/startup/list.html

    http://www.answersthatwork.com/Task...es/tasklist.htm

    http://ww2.whidbey.net/djdenham/Uncheck.htm

Are you a Msn messenger user? Is your ISP AOL or EarthLink? If not AOL then all of these can be removed.

    Do you use these reminders?

After using Startup Control panel to pin point the problems then some of these things need to be uninstalled. Others like Directcd need to be kept but not allowed to load on startup.

    Windows Update - I'm done!

    OK, Mike,

    I downdloaded the StartupCPL program.

I found all but mdm.exe and IPClient.exe in the list and disallowed them.

    Update didn't work.

I admit I stated before I'd continue on, but I'm cooked. I'm going to download manually as Charles stated. Microsoft can go hang itself for all I care.

Thanks for all your help ... everyone here. I won't be back for this, as I stated, I'm surrendering.

So did you at least get the backweb problem fixed?
Find the KODAK Software Updater.lnk file in the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup folder and remove it...drag it to the desktop or into the trash. You could also look again in msconfig in case you overlooked it before.

On Windows Update, I did a groups.google search and came up with the following:

    ============copy/paste==============

    From: R M (muscoby@telusplanet.net)

Ditto .... worked here, but I used this address,

Hey Alice that is a great idea!

    Never thought of it.

All of my own are working without https: but I tested by going to Windows update then changed the http: to https: and did a refresh and it worked as normal.

Betty it is worth a try!

Betty the Startup Control panel and BHODemon that I sent are normal system tweakers/cleaners and your time was not wasted by doing them. If you will take the time to go thu the startup links I sent. And make sure the ones you don't need or use are removed you system will perform better.

Come on "PIT BULL" this a little longer.

If the execllent suggestion by Alice don't work there are still 2 areas that neeed to be addressed even if it don't fix your update problem.

    1. You have both AOL and Earthlink installed. If there is a reason for this then OK! If you swithched or something then 1 should be uninstalled. NOTE: to use AOL messsenger you do not need the other AOL stuff.

    2. Use search to find the IPClient.exe and MDM.exe rename them to to MDM. bak and IPCLIENT.bak.

This may initiate a small error (file not found on boot) but if update then works you will have pinpointed the error.

    So I am outta here........

    Betty,
I did a reformat a couple of days ago and guess what, had a similar problem to you. Went to windows update and it just sat there. I had the auto update option selected so the critical updates downloaded OK for me to install, but I couldn't manually scan for updates, and yes I could also access Office updates OK.

I had this problem several months ago and the same cure worked this time as well. I only manually used a proxy server in the connection tab in the dialup properties. Try unselecting "Automatically detect settings" and the auto config. (cgi-bin) setting box. Sorry I can't remember the exact terminology as I'm not on my machine.
After these changes close IE and open it again, and try accessing windows update.

    Cheers,

    Paul

Update -- and you all hanging in there for me

    Mike and others,

I will try these things later ... it's finally not raining on a Saturday and I have lots to do.

I know I said I was tired of continuing to try, but I will print out and try all your things later. I appreciate your continuing to look for things for me to try ... really! My only excuse is I am stressed to the max at work (10-hour+ workdays to boot) and my days off are very busy. I don't need more stress at home trying to get my computer to work.

But, Mike, the pit bull is back, sort of (a tired pit bull), and when I get my things done for the day, I'll try all these things this evening.

BTW, if I'm offending any pit bull lovers out there, this is just an expression ... I have friends with these dogs and all they want to do is slobber all over me with love. If trained right, these are wonderful dogs.

The backweb problem is still there.

I'll work on this later ... I was wondering if updating to Windows XP Professional might be the answer ... any of you updated successfully to Professional and not live to regret it?

Later ... I'll try things and post back.

    Good!

BackWeb, Ok look in Add/remove and if there chunk it.

If not do a HD search for backweb*.* and delete all.

Then look for it in Regcleaner, tag and delete.

    Mike,

    The Backweb problem is solved.

Trying Windows Update at https vs. http didn't work.

I changed 1PClient.exe and MDM.exe both to .bak - suffixes.

Still no go on the Windows Update.

Can we once again start from this point?

I really wish I knew why this wasn't working.

    Thanks again.

    Ok Betty

Leave the things renamed for now. Appearently they are not needed.

Betty have you uninstalled IE recently?

If not that is the next step if you want to do it.

    Here are the steps.

    1. Do a restore point and any other backup that you use.

    2. Go to Add/remove and click to uninstall IE. It will not really uninstall it, but will put it back to IE5.

    3. After it is back to IE5 try the update again. (be good to know if it works from IE5) but we are giong to reinstall IE6.

    4. In IE5 go to tools-internet options. As you click each tab accross the top look for a default button that is not grayed out. If grayed just skip, if not grayed click to reset to default. After this reboot and "if" #3 above worked or not try the update again.

    5. Now we reinstall. Do a search on your computer for "ie6setup.exe" and if found run it. On 1st screen do not accept typical but chose "minimal or customize" on the next screen in the selection bar chose "FULL ". On the next screen there will be BOLD and non bold items listed. The bold are suposedly already installed but select them anyway and also the non bold. Of course no language files unless you do use them.

When you click to go at some point setup may ask "Reinstall all componets" if so answer yes. Either way it will reinstall IE6.

    Try it now.

    Let us know!

    I want good news!

    Mike

    Windows Update - Hooray!

    Mike,

Before I saw your last post, I thought I'd try it one more time.

This time, I just let it sit when IE stopped ... I mean, I let it sit 10 minutes. Well, oh my, it searched for updates!

Maybe it would have worked before if I'd just let it sit, and maybe all of the suggestions helped urge it along. I guess we'll never know.

I lost my connection several times, so it took all afternoon to load up almost 20 MB of downloads, but it did it!

This thread is way too long, and I do have a couple of other minor things wrong with my system. I'll post them later on and give my kudos to everyone now.

    THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

Nice work Mike! You are my hero for the extra effort you put forth.

Now the bad news... Where did you read that you could uninstall IE6 in XP and it would revert to IE5? You just gotta be careful about some of this Internet advice. :D

I offer this link that may be of value to someone having IE6 problems in XP. Now, don't get me wrong, that link may be hogwash as well but it seems like it may be reasonably accurate since IE6 is so closely integrated with XP from the get-go.

    Cheers. :)

    10-4 to that Zephyr.

Now that you mention it! But I have never had a probem with Ie6 in XP and so forgot this. Actually almost forgot this was an XP!

A repair install is reccomended for this.

I know the XP computers that I deal with have been extremely stable now that I think about it.

And since this is the 1st incident that brought my attention to it I guess it must be pretty solid!

    Mike
