I have dial-up and must disconnect to answer my telephone. I understand there are programs that will allow my download to continue where it left off upon re-connection, instead of starting all over from the beginning. Anybody know about this?

I was a GoZilla user, performed well in download function, but unfortunatley comes with spyware/adware included in the "free" price. Couple of years ago switched over to Star Downloader. Intergrates with IE, Netscape and other browsers. Many nice features, including "resume ", easy to use. Free, NO SPYWARE.
Although most download sites offer "resume" capacity, if they don't, an interrupted download must restart from the beginning of the file.

Does anyone know of any review around where these download accelerator programs are compared and rated? Unfortunately, out here in the country, my 56K modem only works at 24K. I don't want any spyware, do want resume capability, want the greatest speed and would like it to be little or no cost. I have tried Download Accelerator Plus and Flashget and prefer Flashget, but am open to new suggestions.
Also, if anyone feels that any web surfing speedup programs are worthwhile with a slow modem, please share that information also.
    Thank you,
    Barry

Fourteen download managers are reviewed on this page...which I found by doing a Google search for "download manager review. "

It states that Leechget 2004 and Download Express are the best. Has anyone had experience with these using a 56K modem? I couldn't tell from the site whether these were for modems or dsl.

I would also be very interested, if such a program exists. My limited experience confirms my limited reading that software programs are not much help with a dial-up modem. The limiting factor is the physical wiring. Inspect the telephone wiring in your house. Tighten all connections. Replace old or frayed wires. Minimize the number of devices on the line. I got a significant boost by running a separate phone wire from the outside junction box directly to my computer. Now I log on to the ISP at 45 kbps; and with downloads large enough to get a meaningful reading, I average about 40kbps. But when I tried a software program, the normal variations on the internet completely masked any effect. One download would be slower than my default setting, the next would be faster. Many of these delays, especially while web surfing, belong to the internet itself, a part of its ineffable charm. One fellow tested satellite broadband continuously for a month, and half the time it was slower than dialup. In late 2004 or early 2005, Wildblue is coming out with a satellite broadband that is supposed to be cheaper and more reliable than existing services. It is a different technology but not new, having been used succesfully in other applications. They have some big name investors who usually pick winners in telecommunications. It is worth keeping an eye on.

    Duke,
I tried that direct connect to my junction box. I even tried coaxial cable, thinking that would have less dropoff, yet the results were the same. I think it is just one of the few downfalls of living in the country. There just aren't enough people for the phone company to be interested in upgrading their system. I guess I won't install these programs, unless someone has seen a legitimate improvement.
