    Hi,

I built a PC and the 56k modem (pci) cannot find a dial tone. The phone line is fine and works with a phone and the previous pc. I have uninstaled/reinstalled modem - no joy so I got a new modem that is definately XP Pro
compatible installed - same problem. I can query the modem and it says that it is fine. I have tried enabling and disabling internal modem in bios - still no luck.
Mobo is k7vza from ECS. Hardware manager says the modem is ok and the latest drivers are installed. TCP/IP etc is installed
    Any thing I am missing?

The patch cord from modem to wall?
Check the socket with a phone, to see if dialtone is there.
Patch cord in the correct socket on the modem?
Disconnect any other phones in the house and test again, sometimes cordless and/or burglar alarm systems can ***** it up.

phones work fine in socket - also other pcs with modems can use it. I have tried two modems in this pc both say appear fine in XP, but can't get a dial tone - I guess it must nbe a setting???
