As the subject says, my e-Bullion account was hacked. I lost $120, but the worst part is that I'm afraid to do anything on my computer because the support person at e-Bullion said that my keystrokes had probably been collected for the person to get into my account. And that means there was some kind of program that attacked my computer without my knowledge.

I'm not very sophisticated when it comes to security, but I do run Zone Alarm, which I thought would protect me, but seems not to have in this case. After reading this forum, I've downloaded SpyBot, but will that keep my computer safe from this kind of attack?

I never open e-mail with attachments, even if they come from folks I know. This hacker used the name Ahmad Mokhtar Bin Embi, which I never heard before, and transferred the money from my account to his/hers, then an hour later transferred it to a company that exchanges it for foreign currency. I got all of this from the e-Bullion support dude.

I would really appreciate hearing from people who know about hacking and slashing and all of those gorey things. I spend a lot of time online, but I don't even dare to log into PayPal to pay a bill for fear of this person getting the info for my checking account. Thank any and all who can help me through this difficult situation.

    Bright blessings,

    brookela

Dell Inspiron 8000, Windows Me, lots of hard disk space and 256 Mg of memory, Zone Alarm (the latest version), Norton Virus Scan, and more software too numerous to mention.

Not knowing how much info this person got. The first thing I would do would be notify all banking/credit cards etc of the possiblity of fraud. Then contact the big three credit reporting agencies and initate a "fraud alert ". This prevents anyone from getting credit, loan etc without you being contacted directly. I read some about some worms that record keystroke then send it back to the hacker. If your think it is a keystroke issue, I would use another computer and get to all your secure sites and change your passwords.. I'm sure more will chime in.

    Hello Brookela,

"Sounds" as if you have a key logger installed on your system, either from a download or from someone who had physical access to your system. It does what the name implies, logs your keystrokes.

SpyBot does check for keyloggers. To cross check, download this program http://www.anti-keyloggers.com/index.html

Finally, no program will keep you safe, only you can do that by practicing safe computing and looking for security tools, using them on a regular basis and keeping them uptodate. For instance, SSD gets updated on a regular basis, look for updates to it when online.

A Firewall can't do anything about downloads and physical tampering with your system. Go here to understand what a Firewall does and does not do http://www.howstuffworks.com/firewall.htm
and go here to make sense of the Firewall's log
    http://www.robertgraham.com/pubs/firewall-seen.html

    Regards - Charles

Also - get an Anti-virus program if you don't already have one.

Just not opening attachments won't keep you safe (infected HTML email and web sites). And besides, you miss so much fun if you never open attachments.

Does anybody else have physical access to your computer?

In addition to aleekat's good advice you should consider closeing theses accounts and getting new account numbers.

You need to get Adaware also. And run them both daily if you are buying, selling investing.

In addition to the keyloggers site get these

    Script Trap STRAP
    http://keir.net/scriptrap.html

MailWasher opens mail in text mode so has a level of protection from scripts and viri. It does more than handle Spam.

And in case you virus scanner has been disabled do an online virus trojan here
