After chasing around looking for a cure to a problem I have on a computer I`m playing with, I may have found a cure except I don`t know how to do what the instructions tell me to do.
1 Boot windows 95 in safe mode,(That I can handle!)
2 Perform one of the following two steps.

A-- Edit the Config, sys and Autoexec.bat files and disable any references to Smartdrv.exe. To disable a line, type "rem" (without quotation marks) at the beginning of the line.

B-- Rename Smartdrv.exe to another name.

Restart your computer normally (This too I can do).

Evidently I`m supposed to do one or the other, A or B, of the above two steps, My problem is that I don`t have the foggiest notion how to do either one.
It`s hard to be a guru when the brain power is short.
    Thanks, as usual.

    If I remember correctly

    Start/RUN type edit C:\CONFIG.SYS

Should get you where you want to go.

In win98 you could type SYSEDIT in the start/run line but I forgot whether 95 had that or not.

    Hi Moore,

I would recommend the A--procedure only. It is not advisable to rename the smartdrv.exe file since you may want to use it some day and you should leave it as is.

    Anyway, do this:

Click on Start > Run > type SYSEDIT <enter> When you see the Autoexec.bat file presented, look for any occurence of the smartdrv.exe term. If found, click your cursor at the very beginning of that line and type rem <hit space afterwards> Do this for any line that contains the term.

Then click on the header for the Config.sys file. Look for the term again and do as above if any are found. When finished, click File (upper left) Save and exit.

I have no idea what you're trying to accomplish but this will certainly do no harm since Windows loads its own version of Smartdrive automatically without any assistance from the dos boot files.

    Cheers. :)

Just a reach here, if you are trying to disable Smartdrv from loading when running 95 setup, use this setup command at the prompt; if e is the CD.

    e:\win95\setup /c

    Thanks to all hands,
I`ll go check this out and be back. It`s no secret what I`m doing, I just didn`t want to overload the message. Whenever I add a card, like modem, sound, etc. the next time I boot up from a cold start I get the "Windows protection error while initializing IOS, you need to restart your computer." After a search I ended up with the advice in the other message and didn`t know what to do with it. I`ll be back and report, I may need more help if this doesn`t solve the problem.

Well I got shot down there!
There was nothing in the Config.sys file, Autoexec.bat had three entries but no smrtdrv.exe
I`ve got all kinds of information, one thing that might be a clue, when I restart in safe mode, I have found,in device manager maybe two com 1`s two com 2`s 2 LPT 1`s 4 standard floppy disk controller`s.
Also, if it fails to boot properly after removing the extra com`s etc. and, instead of selecting the start in normal mode, I select Bootlog text, it usually boots normally, and will from then on until I add something, like yesterday I added some RAM and it gave me the IOS protection error again, just like it did when I installed the modem, sound card, one at a time.
This is a used computer I`m playing with and if I can get every thing working it`s better than what I`m running now. I have no Idea whether anything in the BIOS has been changed or not.
It`s got a FIC VA-503+ MO BO 350 MHZ AMD K6-2 128 MB of RAM

Hope some of the info I`ve presented is coherent!
Any suggestion is OK, format the hard drive, reinstall WIN95B,
I even thought about setting the BIOS to default but, in my infinite wisdom, decided I might get into a lot of trouble.

Try booting to Safe Mode and deleting ALL the devices that are multiple listed, not just the extra ones but ALL of them. Then reboot back to Safe Mode again and see if you only have singles.

If so, shut down and install the modem. Boot to normal mode and hopefully you'll be in tall cotton. Install any and all other cards and keep your fingers crossed.

    :)

The only double device entries I have seen are the Disk drives andthe com and LPT ports. Are you telling me to remove all these devices AND the modem? It hasn`t showed up as a double.

    OH, BOY,
I do believe that, that, did it. Anyway it`s booted twice now without a hitch. Feels good!!

    AW!,
That computer booted up perfectly every time I asked it to , maybe 6-8 times yesterday.
Turned it on this morning and there`s my " While initializing device IOS : Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer. I usually let it start in safe mode, when it boots back up to that point, when I restart it, and check all the devices in device manager for any yellow warning tags or any duplicate items. None there, I shut it down and sometimes it comes back on normally, sometimes I get to the safe mode select again. It`ll pretty nearly always boot up normally from there if I select step by step confirmation, It may not bother again for several off and on cycles.
Not knowing what else to do I`mm going to observe for a day or two and report back. It`s no big deal but the darned thing isn`t supposed to work that way. ****

After doing a lot more digging it appears my AMD K6-2 processor and Windows 95 have a conflict. It also looks like I could spend enough time finding the patches etc to fix it that I might just be better off to leave it on, when I`m using it all day, and doing my work around thing when it fails to boot.
Really appreciate everybodies efforts, and no doubt I`ll be back to bug some one another day.
    Thanks
