I downloaded a recommended update from microsoft for windows ME and right after that I found no Icons in my control panel and my "windows search for files" has taken on a cropped look.

I believe the download was a driver but I cannot even get to the Windows updated website

    Please help (desperate)

As a temp work around till you find a solution, click on start->search and search for *.cpl

You should come up with all the control panel items.

No Icons were found (not to mention my search window will only display half the normal size)

If you do a search on *.cpl you should get a list of cpl files located in C:\Windows\System and double-clicking on one should open the applet, for example, Appwiz.cpl would be Add/Remove Programs. Are you saying you cannot locate a single cpl file?

This article includes a list of the Windows cpl files:

Use system restore --sys restore will have made a restore point for you right before that update.

dont let winup install drivers for you go to there web site instead
only let winup update windows and or ie

Or you could go > start > programs - accessories > system tools
system information on that page go > tools > update wixard uninstall--To get rid of that last driver install

Dont get in a rush to fix things -- and dont listen to me --the others that have responded have way more exp than I

    Regards lonny
