I have a startup folder on the desktop with some applications in there but I think they are not getting started from there but from a choice in the application. When I put a shortcut in that folder, it often doesn't start on boot.

Some, like a schedule reminder app are important to me but they don't run unless I manually start them.

If you looking to have things start automatically when your PC boots up, you can add them to the default startup folder in your profile, or the 'All Users' profile.

Use exploerer to navigate to 'documents and settings', choose your profile name, and check out the start menu from there.

On my system it looks something like this...
    C:\Documents and Settings\terrafutan\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Any program you put in there should automatically start.

I think this is the info you looking for.
