Modem Drivers

I just tried to use the fax program built in to XP. It wouldnt let me send/recevie faxes. I suspect its the modem drivers from when i switched over from 98. I cant find my modem on US Robotics or 3Coms page I vagely remember reading about a website where i could punch in the FCC ID and get the appropriate drivers. Any links would be greatful.

The FCC ID will only tell you who made it.
What model is it?

 

reboot That's part of the problem I dont remember the Model number, 98 and XP see it differently.

it wont let me install them b/c they are not comatible with XP.

This is not 100% certain but you may have one of the Internal Modems that once they have been installed in one machine or OS they refuse to set up in another.

I fought with four different ones before I got one to work in a Win 98 machine. They had all been in other machines. And I had all of the drivers for them. And the one I did get to work I had to changes slots twice before I go it working.

The heck of it is that I just plugged my ANCIENT USR External in and BINGO !! away we go. No questions asked. But the person that I was fixing the machine for thought $25 was too much.

Also you might try removing the modem(s) from device manager. Physically remove the Modem and restart the machine with out it.

Shut down again and put the Modem back in a different slot if possible. SOMETIMES that works and sometimes it don't.

I have been doin what you suggested to no avail. I am going to try the faxing again today, and see if its not something with the software.

I take that as both the probelm and the answer.

Some things ( like Video and Audio ) will work without the proper drivers. Maybe not at their best but they will work. But Modems do not fit that catagory.

The tests you ran mean nothing if drivers are not right. They ( the tests ) only tell you what the Modem is capable of doing.

You gotta get the OS and the Modem to play nice together. And with Internal Modems that can be tough at times.

and see if its not something with the software.

Possible but I doubt it.

My next suggestion would be to go invest in a GOOD Modem. An External Data/fax. And have it to use on most any OS of your choice.

You have a decent OS. Put decent equipment to go with it.

I have heard many complaints about Internal Modems and Windows XP. I know of at least three 56K that will ( or would ) only connect at 33.6. One was fixed by the vender ( and still messes up on occasion ) . The 2nd went to an External. The 3rd went to cable modem.

I had a look at the US Robotics site and your modem is listed here as OEM with drivers for Win9x, Win NT and Win2K.

Doesn't look like there are drivers for that particular model in XP.

I can suggest going to the OEMs website to check for drivers. I have already looked at 3COM and they state that USR is supporting 56 modems.

The OEM listing might help, but not if it's only for Win9x.

 

It took the Win2K driver but i still get an error in the fax program.

 

Then I would think it's some setting in the FAX program.
Are you sure you have the right fax protocall selected?
Are you sure you're trying to dial/send on the right port (same one as the modem in device mangler)?
Are you sure there's not a second or third instance of DUN (maybe left over from a previous modem)?
Does it connect to the internet with no troubles?

This is the description of the error:

dont know if it connects to the interent correctly, if all, because i have a cable modem.
I am dialing and sending on the right port.
How would i check for the multiple instances of DUN. I think this is unlikely because this is the only modem i have ever used on this computer.

Do you have both a cable modem and an Internal Dial-up Modem ?

If so, sometimes they do not get along well together.

I do not know for sure bit I do not think cable will handle fax. That is the reason I asl.

An External Modem and a Cable Modem live together very nicely.

but this setup got along just fine in 98, now the problem only exists in XP.

 

I had several things in XP Pro that did not work as well as they did in 98.

That is why am back to 98 SE.

Hehehe - I've been following this thread with interest but didn't have much to add until now. Totally agree with the snow bound man from New York State. I have one XP machine set up just for familiarity and learning purposes but everything else here (with the exception of one multi-boot, multi-system box) is and probably will remain 98se. Best darn operating system ever to come out of Redmond and anyone can say anything they want - its virtually crash proof when set up properly.

98 or XP, doesn't matter.
The error you're getting is because there is no protocall linked to the modem for dialup. All your protocalls are for cable modem.
You must install TCP/IP for the modem, and unbind it from TCP/IP (and all others) in network settings. Then set up a dialup connection, and specify to use this connection in the fax program.
The TCP/IP settings you have are for cable, and not for a modem.

How would i go about doing this. I could do this in 98 but i am still learning XP.

 

Right click Network Places, select Properties.
Right click your connection, select Properties.
Select Install, Protocall, Microsoft, TCP/IP.
Once added, make sure that it's NOT the default protocall, and that it is unbound (take out the tick mark) from your LAN, other connection, logon, everything...all in the properties of the connection.
Go to Start > Run > and type in: inetwiz
Choose to create a connection, then select phone, etc...this will add any necessary components for DUN.
Check the properties of the TWO connections you should have in Networking. One only for LAN, other only for dial-up.
In IE, Tools, Internet options, Connection tab, select "Dial whenever a network connection not present ".
It should now work.
