Well the shut down problem is not fixed yet.
I'm not sure whether I have a Norton Ultilities installed or protection for the Recycle bin enabled. I have a Norton Antivirus Coporate edition. In the configure, there is two options: one is the "file system realtime protection" and the other is "microsoft exchange realtime protection" but I have both of them disabled now.

Something to supplement: I can run the defragment now that I have disabled the Norton "Protections? ".

Clarify: I have run the Spybot then the Adaware and then the BHOdemon in the same order as Mike told.

As was mentioned early in this thread, this is difficult to solve as their are many things that can prevent a correct shut down.
A common reason is that Windows cannot close a driver file
eg a Sound Card, Video Adapter driver and so on.
Have you downloaded or changed any drivers lately ?
Installed any new hardware ? Checked for new drivers ?
Tried re-loading the old ones that came with the CDROM,
Sound Card, Video Card etc ?
    regards

You say in 1 mesage that you don't know if you have norton, then in another that you can now defrag because you have turned them off?

    ?

You have to have something in startup!

So now we need to see your startups so d/l and run these 2 programs:

    http://www.3feetunder.com/krick/startup/list.html
All startup list does when run is to send all your startups to a wordpad file. While on screen copy it all and paste it back in a message to us

    Startup control panel
    http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

This gives simple and full control of what starts at boot up. After install there will be a Startup icon in control panel.

We will use startup control panel after we see your startup list!

    I have just one question.

How does your machine run at all ?

MS Office and RealTray ( Very nosey Real Player ) alone are enough to eat up the resources in the best of machines.

I do not know what configsafe is but I would be will to bet that it is causing more trouble then doing good.

    Mirabilis ICQ---Your cjoice

    ScanRegistry--Needed

Taskmonitor-- Not needed-- Only makes defrag work harder and slower. and if not cleaned out once in awhile takes up a lot of disk space for the Applog folder. Which also may cause problems for scandisk and defrag.

    SystemTray---needed

    IrMon--- ????????

LoadPowerFile--only needed if power Management in the Control Panle is used.

Control Panel-- No Idea at all what that is

    TrackPointSrv--???????

Configsafe-- I bet a trouble causer.

Realtray--- Not needed Very Nosey when on the Internet

    vptray--?????

WinampAgent--- I would think now needed to be loaded at startup

    BIE-- Blackice I believe--needed

    LoadPowerFile--same as above

SchedulingAge--- Not needed and does not wokr properly half of the time anyway-Your choice.

    Machine Debug Manager ---??

    rtvscn95---??

    defwatch-- ??

Microsoft Office StartUp--Not really needed and overloads resources and SLOWS the whole daun system down.

These are my ideas for a better running machine.

    My opinion:
    - signifies not needed
    +signified Needed
?signifies Users choice or I dunno
    ............

-Mirabilis ICQ If connected to the internet, automatically runs up
ICQ. Convenience more than anything. ICQ can be started from Start -> Programs. Not needed, start from shortcut when you want it.

+ScanRegistry Scans the system registry and makes back-ups at start-up. Important should the registry become corrupt. Needed

+TaskmonitorThe Task Monitor checks the disk-access patterns of programs when they are started and stores this information in log files in the Applog folder. Task Monitor also records the number of times you use a program. The Disk Defragmenter tool uses this information to optimize your hard disk so that programs that you use frequently are loaded faster. Not required - but can be useful. Note: for Norton Anti-Virus 2002 users, loading TaskMonitor will typically solve many, if not most, of those annoying IE scripting errors (per Symantec's Knowledgebase). Users choice, personal opinion is leave it. I defrag often and like the idea behind this optimization.

+SystemTray SYSTRAY.EXE - System Tray Services. Provides the Volume Control, PC Card Status, Power Management and other icons that reside in the System Tray (see here). SYSTRAY.EXE may be disabled if none of these services are required. It will launch as and when required if you later enable the icons. If you need these items they're available via Start -> Settings -> Control Panel Users choice

?IrMon System Tray access to infra-red devices. Not required unless you use infra-red devices.

+LoadPowerFile Power management specifics such as monitor shut-off, system standby, etc. Associated with power management and is listed twice - see here. Loads your selected power scheme. May not be required - depends upon whether you modify the default Control Panel -> Power Options settings.

-Control Panel System Tray icon for a Silicon Motion LynxEM based PCI Graphics Card. Not needed

?TrackPointSrv Supports the "pointer stick" in lieu of a mouse on an IBM ThinkPad laptop. Necessary for the "scroll" button to work. Users choice

?Configsafe lets you identify changes to the registry, INI files, System asset files, system hardware, network connections, and operating system versions -- provides a restore function. Your choice

-Realtray System Tray icon for RealPlayer. If you subsequently start RealPlayer manually it adds itself back to the start-up list. You can stop this from happening by right-clicking on the tray icon and disabling SmartCenter via Preferences. Not needed, shortcut startup.

?vptray System Tray icon for Norton Anti-Virus Corporate Edition. Gives access to the options available and may not be required. Some users may have problems - refer here [this should be looked at as startup/shutdown problems are a common problem. Fixes are also included within.]

-WinampAgent System Tray application that starts up WinAmp media player. Available via Start -> Programs. Not needed, use shortcut unstead.

    BIE ???

+LoadPowerFile Same as previous one in list

-SchedulingAgent MS Scheduling Agent displayed as a box with a stopwatch in the System Tray that is only needed if you have regular scheduled disk defragmenting, ScanDisk, etc. Required if you have regularly scheduled events such as weekly virus scans but you can schedule these for the wee hours and start this up when ready.

-Machine Debug Manager Used by developers for debugging. Those who have encountered it have unchecked it with no degradation in performance. Can also be listed as MDM7 . Not needed. May be IE loaded or msoffice. After making sure IE debug preferences are disabled, rename this thing to something like mdm.exx and that will take care of that. MSOffice tends to use this thing at random times and it will boomerang back into statup. Unless you are into debugging of course.

?rtvscn95 Real-time virus scanner component of Norton Anti-Virus Corporate Edition. Have to defer opinion of this one to those who use Norton.

?defwatch Detects out-of-date virus definitions for Norton Anti-Virus Corporate Edition and runs the Defwatch Wizard. Only required if you don't update the virus definitions manually on a regular basis. Users choice but I’d disable and do this manually when I’m ready. Prefer to hoard all my resources for the "Definitely Needed Startups" and the tasks at hand.

-Microsoft Office StartUp Resource hog that launches common MS Office components to help speed up the launch of Office programs. Some users claim there's no difference with or without it but it isn't required anyway. Osa9.exe is the Office 2000 variant. In my opinion definitely not needed.

    ====================

    What's BIE?????

    =========
In the above where references indicate a link should be provided such as when it says see here, you can find the actual live link from within my thread where I offered the links to look up these buggers to mflynn.

Sorry no time to edit this myself with ubb code needed to make links active. It's dinner time and I'm hungry....

    Thanks Ann

9:00 Pm just got home, had dinner with friends after work. Has been a tough week!

Anyway you and BillyBob have covered all the bases.

I too would like to know what the BIE is. Wing do you even know?

So tell us what this BIE is? Do you use ICQ?

    Lol! BillyBob

    Quote:

    hee hee!

Wing you need to get rid of this stuff before we go any further.

Install the Startup Control panel in my former message.

Then use it to delete the bad ones Ann and BillyBob have detailed for you. Uncheck the ones you are not sure about, this will allow you to put them back if you find you do need them.

I think the BHO you have is the Brilliant Digital spy/adware use BHODemon to disable it.

Use the startup list to post back the info, it will give us more info in greater detail than what you typed.

    Your move!

The webpage that you gave me does not contain startup list program so I don't have one and cannot copy the files to a wordpad files.
But anyway I have cleared the unneccessary startup files but I still can't shut down. Can the problem be due to a damaged RAM?
    P.S

Do you speak Chinese and are you using an IE search companion or search bar of some type called Hundred Degrees?

Is your windows English, is IE English?

Had to use altavista to translate most of what I have been able to squeeze out this bdplugin.dll reference but I gather there are a lot of unhappy campers here inquiring on how to get rid of it. This may well be the cause of the shutdown and if not it may be assumed that it will cause you problems somewhere along the line.

Am including this link to altavista translation:

    http://babelfish.altavista.com/

Use the url below in the "Translate this Web Page" Box, in case others wish to puzzle this out.

Translation is "Chineese to English "

    http://baidu.com/

    ==========
No one is ignoring your inquiry into your memory problem. We just like to take each task or problem one at a time. Right now the startup cleanup is more important. Many secondary problems have been know to disappear after doing such a cleanup. Regardless this type of maintenance is highly recommended and practiced.

If the other problem still exists when this task is done properly then it will be addressed in turn. Hang in there...

Great Ann I searched and found references but could not tell what it is. You have probably pegged it.

Wing go into BHODemon and click the details button on this BDHELPER and disallow it to run. Then reboot.

Wing I just don't believe you have a memory/ram problem. If so it would cause more widespread problems.

I am sorry, I picked the wrong startup list link. Here is the correct one. So get it and post all back to us.

    http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/startuplist.zip
StartupList does nothing but grab all Autoload (startups) and puts them
In a Wordpad file so that you can then copy it and paste it back to us in a
message so that we can advise on a problem here.

    WOW !!!

For COMPARING ONLY. Not to say who is right or wrong. Because as you can see we both have the same BASIC OS but setup quite differently.

This is only to show how much DIFFERENT machines and setups of same can be. And why it makes it easier for people on the BBS to have a report like this to work with.

It also shows that I use Audio in DOS.

The Path in the Autoexec.bat needs to be there or else the program that uses the folder E:\IMS will not work. ( Program specific not Windows. )

:) It even says we started this program form a different place. :)
