    Hello to all,

I got a new PC with WinXP pre-installed. As I'm in the DTP business the main applications on this PC are graphics and DTP programs, like Quark Xpress (3.32 in my case). Installation of Quark worked out fine and I can use the application as I could on the former Win98/WinME computer. With one exception: the postscript fonts. I learned that WinXP has its own font management and would not need the Adobe Type Manager ATM.
However I installed the latest ATM version 4.1. It works so far as it links the activated fonts to the fonts folder in Windows. But I can't print the Type1 fonts from Quark Xpress. They are shown in the type fonts menu and on the screen, but printing on a PS printer they will show them as courier font. I guess the reason is that Quark needs the win.ini with all the fonts and printer ports registered. I did this manually - without success.
Even in a EPS or PDF file made from Quark the PS fonts are missing.
Alle other applications like InDesign, Illustrator, Corel, Word, etc. work fine with all the Type1 fonts I have on my system.
    Can anyone help me?
Would Win2000 cause the same problems?
    Many thanks
    Charlie

Charlie - try something quick, easy, painless, and safe. Place a Quark Xpress shortcut on your desktop and then in properties, set it to run in compatibility mode (98 or ME).

If that fixes your problem, you are good to go. Otherwise post back and we'll see what a little research turns up on this issue.

One question though (and heavy-duty graphics is way out of my league) - you said that XP was supposed to handle fonts and not need Adobe Type Manager. And you then said you installed it anyway. Was there a problem with the native XP font handling?

    Hi Newt,

I already placed a desktop shortcut and set it to compatability mode, first 95 and then 98. It didn't solve the problem.
I'll give it another try and de-install Quark to do a clean new installation.

MS says you can install postscript fonts the same way you do with the normal true-type and system fonts - by adding them to the fonts folder of Windows. That works well, but not for Quark (which is an older 16-bit application). Therefor and to manage the fonts in a more comfortable way (fonts packs etc.) I installed the latest version of ATM - with no effect to Quark.

I think it's not a matter of 'heavy-duty' graphics rather than of the 16-bit emulation, especially with regard to the fonts handling. I'm not sure about the role of the win.ini in XP and how to get it really work. Although XP doesn't need a win.ini it is there. Apparently for the purpose of 16-bit emulation. Do you know about this and whether you have to configure it manually?
    Regards, Charlie

Charlie - your problem is app-specific enough that I suggest looking Here and trying the tech support forum for windows users of QuarkXPress 3.3x.
