Though I am the only user of my computer, Win2000Pro was installed
for me (I am technically more or less illiterate) with quite a number of
main folders in the Documents and Settings folder. In what I now realise was
a foolish attempt to "tidy up ", I transferred everything which it was
physically possible to transfer to User and I am now left with just User,
All Users WINNT and Default User WINNT, having deleted the ones which I
emptied. This lasted for several sessions, between which I shut down and
    re-booted.

So far as I have yet found, the only problem caused by what I did is total
chaos with my desktop shortcuts. Several disappeared and when I put them
back, they (and new ones) appear in pairs. Usually, when I delete one of a
pair, both of them are deleted. In some cases, when one only of a pair is
deleted, an error message prevents the deletion of the remaining one.

Have you learned people come across this problem? An almost identical problem was posted in Yahoo Groups in 2001, but was not resolved.

Any help would be much appreciated, as formatting and re-installing is (for
me) too horrible a solution to contemplate

Thanks, Geezer. Since my original post, I became convinced that nothing else works; my drive was formatted and W2k re-installed and now all is well. But what a lot of work!
