This is further to the thread "usb pci card install problems "
Foregive me if I should of continued the thread- however this is a new additional topic.
The usb pci card is in the pci socket. Win 98 se recognizes it.
After some effort the drivers for the Usb pci card were installed and are functioning. The processor is a Amd K6 350. The motherboard is a epox EP51-MVP3E model.
The two programs for the Intel webcam are installed. They initially would not install unless the Usb ports were there - i.e drivers for USB port were there ( interestingly enough they seem to have disappeared since taking out the Pci Usb card).
When running the test program for the Intel webcam teh program states to install the camera the program does not recognize the camera which is plugged into either usb port.
As well when plugging in a standard joystick into either Usb port is not recognized.
Can I test the USb sockets (ports ?) for function ? I have tried to install the Pci Usb card into 2 different Pci sockets.
Could it be the Pci Usb card is defective?

    thanks

It is likely but you should see if your USB devices work on the port off your mother board. If they do, then you have eliminated that possibility.

You could also turn off the USB in the BIOS and then see if the PCI card functions as there could possibility be a conflict although mother board with an AMD Athlon processor works happily with or with the USB being turned off in the BIOS.

If at all possible test the card in another computer. If it fails there then you have a duff card.

usb mboard check and bios settings

    thanks for the rapid answer,

to check the pins marked usb on the motherboard- what would be the procedure and with what device?
the reason I went with a pci card was that I was told by a tech that there are five different pin configurations for the usb setup on the motherboard hence confusing.
As for the bios to disable the usb what settings should I change ?

    thanks

You can connect any USB device to the USB Ports at the back/front of your computer. Remember to install the software first, then connect the USB device generally after re-booting unless the installation software prompts you to "Plug in your device now ".

You do not need to go inside the computer (motherboard) but make sure that USB is "Enabled" in the BIOS. There should be a setting in there to "Enable USB" support. You will have to find the setting for your computer to get into the BIOS first. Mine is the F1 key. Yours may be different and may be shown as you boot up.

I have not come across what the Techie told you about 5 different configurations.

The PCI card does not depend on the motherboard but only on the installation software that came with it or downloaded from the manufacturer's web site. I generally check the website anyway just in case they have a later version than on the CD.

    still porblems !!

    Mahmud603,
    well still !!!.
run the cios setup cahnged the "on board chip - usb" from disabled to enabled
changed the "usb keyboard support" from disabled to enabled.'
removed all Usb drivers via safe mode startup.
    installed pci usb card
the startup detected the new hardware

it seeks a pc univ serial bus usp open house controller
i point the installer to either - the cd wind 98 disc, the disc on a dir on the hard drive, a floppyb with the requested unfound files on it, and even the files copied onto the hard drive. Wait there was one trick yesterday have to try that.
the system looks for a file openhci,.sys then reboots ????

    "installed pci usb card
the startup detected the new hardware "

    Wrong.

Install the drivers first from the CD that must have come with the card. If not, download drivers from the web site. Shut down and then install the card.

You seem to be nearly there. The file(s) it cannot find should be on the CD but you do not mention anything about that CD.
