On the XP run the network connection wizard again and let it redo the connection. Stop when it asks to make a disk for the other computer (not needed).

EDIT! Then if the computers have not been powerd down do so for both!

    ok done
now the XP does not list the ME computer in the results of Search for Computers on the network.
before running the Network Wizard, it displayed both, but did not allow access to ME.

OK enough of this. This is coming from XP HOME. It is not meant to be networked.

So we will do it a different way.

Send me an Email at mflynn@lexcominc.net so that I can reply and send you the netbeui protocol for XP. It is not installed on XP but is included on the CD which you probaly don't have.

Whle I am sending to you go to the ME rt click Network Neighborhood-properties -add-protocol-microsoft-netbeui. Then reboot.

By then I should have you reply.

    OK!

    Mail sent.

Here is the message that commes with the attachment.

You should be able to click the files above and chose "save to disk" then browse to the correct folder below and save them there.

    #1) copy nbf.sys into the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\
    #2) copy netnbf.inf into the C:\WINDOWS\INF\

IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A WINDOWS FOLDER IT MAY BE WINNT SO IT WOULD BE

    #1) copy nbf.sys into the C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\
    #2) copy netnbf.inf into the C:\WINNT\INF\

    Mike

If you cannot find these folders you may need to unhide them so: My Computer-Tools-Folder Options-View Put dot in Show hidden Files and Folders. Reverse this back when you are through.

    Yes only on the ME!

Did you do the add of Netbeui as I directed on the ME.

If you did then reboot the ME!

Now go top the XP, Network properties ADD network protocol and add netbeui to XP then reboot.

Then test the network connection form both sides.

    ok
the (XP)files were deleted from the specified locations on the (ME)
Netbeui was added, and rebooted on (ME)

I can not locate a place to add the Netbeui protocol on the (XP)

I am at My Network Places, network connections, LAN, Properties,
client for microsoft networks, properties, then the only thing left is RPC Service.

Local Area Connection Properties has 3 tabs: general, authentication, Advanced.

Under the General tab: connect using (nic) , The connection uses the following items, Client for microsoft networks, file and printer sharing for microsoft networks, QoS packet scheduler, Internet protocol (TCP/IP)

XP home is different. The only way to logon to as Administrator is in safe mode.

So reboot and tap F8 repeately while booting and select SAFE MODE. Then go to the Network properties and (the location that you see Client and TCP/IP) click Install and hopefully Netbeui is there if so add. Then reboot to full mode.

If you want to keep going we should be able to do this but XP HOME is a different animal. But many people have given up and upgraded to PRO just to network.

So will wait for your response.

I'm in Safemode, Network Connections, but "Properties" is not able to be selected. The only selectable's are "New Connection" and "Network set up Wizard ".

The only other place available under NetworkConnections, is Advanced, Windows optional networking components wizard.
Under subcomponent is Management and monitoring tools, Networking services, and Other network file and print services.

Does this sound like it would be the proper place to find what we are looking for?

    No!

Boot back to full! Do a search for the files I sent and see if they are found in the correct palces. See the locations in my email.

If they are in the correct places then you should be able to go to My Network Places-properties-local area connection-properties-Install. When you click install it should offer Netbeui as a protcol that you can add!

    Recheck!

Ok here is a link I found that gives the steps. Ignore steps 1 & 2 since we have done that.

Some more for you, remember that if you don't see your screens it is because they are XP HOME.

NetBeui is installed on the ME correct?

If not add it as instructed in another message.

If it is go to it in network properties and click advanced. at the bottom you will see a box to check that says make this the default protocol. Check it!

    reboot

    test the network access

    Thank's Mike !
The network access is working for both computers.
    I really appreciate your help.

I'm getting a couple of new error messages, now that they are able to communicate.

1 The (XP) displays an error message from Norton Antivirus saying it is unable to scan for virus when I open the
My Documents on the (ME) computer, from the (XP) computer.
It suggest that I disable "Run in compatibility" mode, since the two computers do not have the same OS. Do you know where that setting is located ?

2 An error when trying to print from the (XP) to the default printer in the (ME). I think it wants an (XP) printer driver. ?

If I add an (XP Pro) computer to this network in the future, do you think it should set up a little easier ?
Is it possible to have different protocol's in the same network ?

All in all, a tremendous accomplishment on your part !

    Thank's

    Richard

No there should be no problem with PRO. XP home should be called XP Neutered or XP crippled.

Yes you can have different protocols

Don't use or like Norton so perhaps someone else will advise you there. But I would guess that there may be a setting to not scan network drives in Norton. You have full virus coverage on both computers anyway right.

You should D/L the XP printer driver and install on XP even though the printer is accross the network. Then the printer error will go away.

    You done pettry good yourself.

    Get everything backed up.
