In my last post, I mentioned I was trying to fix a friends old laptop ( he wants to give it to his daughter ). On bootup I get the standard display with Bios version, cpu, ram ect.. Along with it was the message,( System COMS checksum bad - run SETUP
    <F2> to Setup

I went to setup, chose load defaults, saved, and exited.
Each time I boot it I get the same messages. Ok, I just went flashing the bios on my computer to get it to recognise a bigger hard drive, so I thought I may have to do the same on this one. Then I found this thing isn't Y2K ready. It won't accept a date for 2000. Looks like it might need a new bios but I can't find any chipset info.
    Any help?

sounds like a bad cmos battery, replace the cmos battery. I am sure laptops would have cmos batteries just like any desktop system. Open the case and look for a small round battery, replace it and it should fix your problems.

I have old 486's that accept the year 2000. I don't think that is your problem, don't worry about that. It's the battery.
