I think you'll be needing to run a Repair Install of XP. It'll restore any missing or corrupt files and get you back in bootable shape (usually!).

Configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM drive.

Insert your Windows XP compact disc (CD) into your CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer.

(You can also boot with a Windows 98/Me Startup disk with CD support and run WINNT.EXE in the I386 folder on the CD)

When the "Press any key to boot from CD" message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

When you see the following message displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

At this point an option to press R to enter the Recovery Console is displayed. Do not select this option.

On the Windows XP Licensing Agreement screen, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.

Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press the R key to repair Windows XP.

Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.

    Good luck. :)

Ouch! Some people have all the luck.

It's possible that your Pagefile has become corrupted by the reinstall. There is also the possibility of a RAM failure. Try booting to Safe Mode and doing the Pagefile (Virtual memory) fix mentioned here.

Since you just got XP a week ago and the system is giving you this much trouble, you should do a complete reinstall from scratch. Using the XP install disk will allow you to reformat and reinstall without any further utilities required. You will lose any files you created in the past unless you have them backed up but you probably don't have that many in this short of a time span.

Something must have went astray in the first install. Was it a clean install or an upgrade?

I was going to add that you should check the drive surface for flaws but you beat me to the punch. I would be very suspicious of that drive.

Good luck with the other one, I'm sure that will end your problems.
