I've been using 4.7 on my Win98SE box (DSL) until I mistakenly formatted E:, where I had installed it. I was able to use an install of MS IE on C:, but I don't like it or Outlook Express.

When I downloaded NS7 and installed it, I was delighted to discover it had all my addresses intact . Browsing went smoothly, but test messages to myself brought the response "Message was sent, but unable to write to "Sent" folder" (or some such).

All test mail arrived, but via Outlook Express. I opened a "local Folders" directory on another drive, with subs "Sent" and "Drafts ", but that's clearly not the way to go.

My DSL provider will support only 4.7 (!), so I can get no suggestions from them; perhaps you can help?

    Welcome to the Forum, huitre!

    Hi huitre,

    Several things you can try:

    With Netscape closed:
    Open Windows Explorer
    Browse to your Mail Folder
    C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\xxxxxxxx.slt\Mail\mailaccount\
    (Depending on your OS)

Delete the Sent.msf file. Do not delete the Sent file with no msf extension.

If you have enabled "Empty Trash on Exit" disable that function and see if the Sent mail is then saved to your Sent folder.
Edit | Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings | Server Settings

Check the Properties | File Attributes of your Sent folder, and be certain that it is not marked "Read Only ".

The battle to reclaim Netscape as the Default Browser is a mighty one!

    In Internet Options,
    Start|Settings|Internet Options
    Programs Tab
Disable: Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser.

    In Netscape Preferences|Navigator
Click on the "Set Default Browser" button

    HTH,

    Ramona :D

    huitre,

    Also check the following settings:

    Edit|Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings|Server Settings
Ensure that the Local directory points to the correct path for your Mail Folder

    Edit|Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings|Copies & Folders

    "When sending a message, automatically"
Ensure there is a checkmark in the box to the left of "Place a copy in: "
Select the radio button in front of "Sent: "
On the bar to the right of "Sent: ", click on the down arrow and select your Mail User ID
    The bar should then say:
"Sent Folder on: your Mail User ID.
Click on OK near the bottom of the window.

You will need to close Netscape and restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

Thanks to your guidance, Ramona, I can provide a couple of details you may be able to use.

I can climb down the directory tree to ...\profiles\default\, but "bvyy6zob.slt" is a *file* , not a directory, listed with "Abook.mab" and "bookmarks.htm.bak ". A search of all drives reveals NO "Sent" folder of any sort (except for those made as a backup for the old 4.7 mail files. These are compressed, confined and renamed by the archive program, and not likely to have been seen at all by the 7.0 installer.)

Note that I did try to set up a profile other than "default ", but had to back out when the NScape wizard asked for the (I think) incoming server. Outgoing was filled in, but I have no idea what the name of the incoming is.

I'll disable IE's check on its serving as default browser; hope that doesn't interfere with my mail. IE is the slender thread I have to rely on till we can put NS7 in place.

Does any of this suggest a way to go from here?

    Thanks,
    Bob

    Hi Bob,

The incoming server is required. Call your ISP and ask what to enter for the incoming server. What did you use in your Communicator settings? It would be the same for Netscape 7.

You said your Address Book converted intact when you installed Netscape 7. I assume then that Communicator 4.7 was installed, and user files were converted from 4.7?

Did you set up a Mail Account when you installed Netscape 7? On a new install, you must first set up the Mail Account, before you can copy any mail files from your Communicator Mail Folder.

Another question: you stated that you opened a "local Folders" directory on another drive, with subs "Sent" and "Drafts ".

"Local Folders" are Netscape designated folders for Newsgroup postings, etc. They are not be used as your default Mail Folders.

I think you really do need to create a new Profile in order to sort out your Mail chaos. Remember to set up your Mail Account first:
    Edit|Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings

Then, close Netscape, and copy your Mail files without the SNM (from Communicator) or MSF (Netscape 7) extensions to your new Profile.

In the Mail & Newsgroups Account Setting, ensure that under the "Server Settings" the "Local directory:" target line points to the correct location on your HD.

My guidelines for Creating a new Profile might be of help.

Once you are up and running, wait a few days, then delete the corrupt Profiles.

If you have questions, please let us know.
