I used Romona's "Clean Install of 7.01 ", it really went well! :D

I didn't install the mail for I have always used 4.79 mail. The reason I liked it was one could set any sound to notify new mail. After reading about the mail improvements in 7.01 mail I think I would like to try it.

    My question:
Can I just install the mail and IM? Will it transfer my mail/settings from 4.79?

    Thanks :)

    Hi arkie,

First, glad to see that you updated Netscape to a more stable, and workable Version!

Did you install a Version of 7.01 without Mail? If so you can download the mail.xpi and nim.xpi files from the FTP Site.

No, it will not convert your 4.79 Mail Files, but that is no problem. Copying the Mail from 4.79 to 7.01 is a very simple step. Once you have installed the Mail component, and have created your Mail Account in the Mail & Newsgroups Accounts Settings:

    Close Netscape

    Open Windows Explorer
In the 4.79 Mail Folder copy the files without SNM extensions.
    C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\profilename\Mail

Paste these files in the 7.01 Mail Account Folder. Answer YES, when prompted if you wish to replace the existing files.
    C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\*.slt\Mail\mailaccount\
    (Depending on your OS)

Open Netscape 7.01, and your mail should be in place.

NOTE: back up your Users folder in 4.79 before you begin the edit.

    Post back with any questions.

    Ramona :D

    EDIT:
It might be easier for you to install the Version with Mail & Newsgroups than to try and add on the two components: mail.xpi and nim.xpi.

    Hi arkie,

I decided to experiment with adding the mail.xpi and nim.xpi files to the SillyDog Standalone Version of 7.01 (no Mail & Newsgroups). It was a disaster, so don't even go there. I need to work with this some more to see where I might have gone wrong. This was on my Win 95 machine, so it took forever, due to my blazing 166 mHz processor!

If I were you, I would reinstall a Netscape Version with Mail & NG's, leaving your Profile as is. Then copy and paste your Mail Files as discussed earlier.

    Hi arkie,

No trouble at all! I'm always up for learning something new, and had never tried adding the mail.xpi file. I'm just glad you saw my post before trying it yourself.... That was my major concern.

Let us know if you have any problems with your new install. Back up your Profiles first!

OK, I uninstalled 7.0 and reinstalled.

It ask me to select a profile.. one by "My name" or a "Default" profile. I choose the one with My name... wrong, when I open 7.0 it showed some old bookmarks, not the ones I had on the 7.0 that I uninstalled. So I closed and open 7.0 again, when asked for the profile I selected "Default ". This time bookmarks were correct.

    Looking in the C:\Documents and Settings\My name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\2qg92dd5.slt\Mail\
I show two folders... Local Folders and another folder "mail.my cable address ". (I never moved this folder to this location?)

Next, In the 4.79 Mail Folder I copy the files without SNM extensions.
    C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\profilename\Mail
and pasted them in C:\Documents and Settings\My name\ApplicationData\Mozilla\Profiles\default\2qg92dd5.slt\Mail\local folders.

I rebooted open mail and nothing there? I then moved the folder "mail.my cable address" into the local folder.
Rebooted, open mail but all that it shows is Outgoing Server SMTP settings & User name. None of my file folders, Inbox, Sent, Trash, etc. are showing?

    Where did I miss it?

    Update....

I went ahead and set up my mail account, then I had an option under Tools "Import ". I Imported mail Communicator but now all I can do is move mail to those folders. I can't open them. ?

Oh well, my address book made it so that's all I really needed. :D

    Hi arkie,

This is a step you missed:

First you have to create your Mail Account in Netscape 7.01.
    Open Mail
    Edit|Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings
Then the Mail Wizard will guide you through the setup.

    Where you went wrong:
Next, In the 4.79 Mail Folder I copy the files without SNM extensions.
    C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\profilename\Mail
and pasted them in ~\xxxxxxxx.slt\Mail\local folders.

They should have been pasted into your Mail Account Folder. However, as you did not create the Mail Account first, it no doubt, wasn't there...
Netscape uses the Local Folders to save postings to newsgroups, etc. They are not be used as your default Mail Folders.

The other "mail.my cable address" was probably copied over from Communicator when you reinstalled 7.01.

I should have spelled out creating the Mail Account once again, when I suggested reinstalling Netscape. I did say to create the Mail Account, but it was in conjunction with installing the mail.xpi component...

I see that you have now created your Mail Account. Good going!

Now, I would create a new Profile, and straighten out your Mail, remembering this time to NOT place it in the Local Folders, but in your Cable Mail Account.
