I just loaded XP on 4.9 gig partation and it seems to be chewing up a lot of space.
When I was using 98se I was able to delete temp files with a small DOS program. That dosn't work with XP. Is there something I can use in place of deltemps? What other junk can I delete, like update files and such? Is there a site that can give me some direction on what I can get rid of?

    Thanks

It seems that by default, XP assumes a large drive. There are a few, simple ways to save space.

1.) Right-click My Computer, Properties, System Restore and highlight your drives. Click Settings and reduce the amount of space used for SR.

2.) Click the Advanced tab, Startup and Recovery Settings, and set the section on writing debug information to "None ". Search for any *.dmp files you may already have and delete them.

3.) Check your settings in Internet Options and reduce the amount of space allocated for temporary internet files.

4.) Go to Power Options in the Control Panel and disable hibernation (if present).

5.) Run Disk Cleanup to safely remove any files in the temp folder that have not been recently accessed. Compress old files to save space. (Remove temp files manually, if you want, from \Windows\Temp and \Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temp, but this folder will only be visible if you have unhidden it in Folder Options.) Click the More Options tab in Disk Cleanup and remove all the restore points except the last.

6.) Run the free version of AdAware 6 to get rid of junk:
    www.lavasoft.de

7.) If you installed SP1 after you installed XP, delete the backup files.

8.) Move your pagefile to another (preferably its own) partition. Moving it to a faster drive is preferable.

    Hi bobw
When you installed XP, did you do a clean install, or an upgrade? When you go into add/remove.... do you still have your windows 98?

Oops.... Abraxas! Looks like we were typing at the same time. :)
You win. Yours is a much better detailed response. :D

Well, Daizy, the only person I really want to "win" is the OP ;) .

Thanks for your input. When he used the phrase "chewing up ", I immediately defaulted to those things that grow dynamically, forgetting the things that just sit there taking up space .

    Thanks for the tips.
I made some of the changes suggested and got back some space. I have loaded the SP1 and see some folders in windows and wonder if they can go. "service pack files" and
    "$nt service pack uninstall$ "

    Thanks

Those can go if you are satisfied that you will not need to uninstall any of the updates from WU.

If you are satisfied that you will not want to uninstall SP1, then you can delete those backups, too. Probably:
    C:\Windows\ServicePack Files

I'd suggest highly making a slipstreamed CD with SP1 so that if you ever need to reinstall, SP1 will be included automatically in the installation. This will eliminate the need for any backup files as the installation is integral.
