My Compaq laptop has begun to boot up only in safe mode.

Diagnostic check yields: "Video testing not supported in 16 color mode. An error occurred during the ID of Diagnostic Library: DL_VIDEO.DLL. Test failed error code 014005001.

Recommended action: Check version of DL and make sure correct windows drivers are loaded for that device. "

The machine was working fine until I went online last week and it froze up while loading a web page. Since then, all I can get is safe mode.

Can anyone walk me through the solution to this mess?

    Thanks,

    Doctor Dale:

Your error is unrelated and caused because your are in safemode which only runs in 16 bit standard vga. cpq diagnostics cannot run in 16 bit color:

    ============
    Have you virus scanned?
    .............................................

Have you looked in device manager for problems with devices/drivers?
    ............................................

    Have you ran scandisk?
    ........................................

Have you deleted ie temp files [both ie's and windows temp]?:
Clear your Temporary Internet Files, History, and Cookies:

    Restart to DOS and enter
    >Deltree c:\windows\tempor~1
    >Deltree c:\windows\locals~1\tempor~1
ENTER after each of the above commands, and respond Y after confirming that the folder name is correct. This will delete all files in the \TIF folder (and leave cookies alone).

If you do not want to keep cookies, or do not mind relogging into sites, enter
    >Deltree c:\windows\cookies

If you wish to preserve the cookies but get them reindexed, enter
    >Del c:\windows\cookies\index.dat

    Similarly with History, enter either
    >Deltree c:\windows\history
    or
    >Del c:\windows\history\index.dat

On restart, Windows will recreate any of the folders deleted, and if you only deleted the index.dat files, they will be recreated also.

    ......................................................

Have you tried an F8 key bootup to manualy select/try a "normal" startup?
    .......................................

Have you tried a restartstart in dosmode or c:prompt command to have scandisk try to fix the registry:
    once at c: prompt type:
    scanreg /fix

    .................
    Just a few "could-do's "

Thanks for the ideas. Nice to hear from someone who knows what they're doing!

    I have done the following:
Looked in device manager. All devices were operating properly. I couldn't see any driver problems (although I'm not sure I'd know one if it bit me) but I updated all drivers anyway.
    I've run scandisk.
I've deleted all temp files (TIF, cookies and history).
I've tried the F8 bootup and selected "normal" (1).
    I've tried the scanreg/fix.

    All to no avail.

However, the virus may be a problem. My antivirus program(McAfee) is ancient. I tried installing a recent engine on my desktop a while back and it crashed me. McAfee was no help and I had to finally uninstall it. (With lots of subsequent problems). As to the laptop, McAffee doesn't offer an update any longer for my version. And I'm leery of installing some thing newer. And of course I can't go online anyway in safe mode. Is there a good antivirus solution?

    Thanks.

    Dale

How about tshooting steps when OS only starts in safemode. In other words you have no problem with safemode ergo the problem may be in one of the items that does not run or is not loaded while in safemode. See my link in the following past post:

    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9990&highlight=safemode

Some of the procedures, included in the above link, have already been done. Those of course can be ignored.

    =============
 Pardon me but here goes my ignorance showing up yet again.......

Doesn't win98 have a bootup option for safemode with "Network Support "? Does this not allow one to get online? Beat me with a stick cause I know I should know this basic answer but I have skipped around so much on various versions of windows lately that I'm a little foggy on this.

 Sorry DSL+ Xp + Lan using just such an option allows me to do that.

If not you are obviously online somehow, either at work or via friend. There's gotta' be some member with a handy dandy link to a trial or freeware "Virus Scanner" that can be downloaded and either burnt on CD or "copy to floppy ". If to large for floppy there is a freeware application called "File Splitter" that breaks the file down into floppy size pieces and puts them back together again later. If you need this additional nfo just append to post.

If you did get hit with a virus, chances are that it's a new or recent one and you'd need the latest Dat file anyway. I bring this up because I think Mcaffee like most popular Virus Scanners will run from the CD. Point may be mute though as an indication from such a scan using outdated dat file is no indication that you Are clean. Will still have to leave this one be and pass this to those members who are more familiar with Mcaffee.

Somehow, while trying everything I could, my laptop seems to have fixed itself (I won't take credit for it!). Startup and shutdown seem considerably slower than before, but I can live with it.

As near as I can recall, the miracle occurred while either: changing to 256 colors so I could run the diagnostics, or while in the process of downloading and installing updated drivers from Compaq. Since it seems to be OK, I downloaded a 15-day trial copy of Norton 2003 anti-virus and scanned for bad stuff...it deleted two infected files.

So it seems ok for now. The only puzzle I see at present is that allthough I downloaded and installed the ATI Church video driver (plus the ALI AGP video driver and GATMode patch -- all from Compaq), when I check Device Manager and look at Display Adapter Driver it shows "ATI Tech - Enhanced ". Do you suppose that's just a different name for the drivers I loaded? I'm just curious.

I must have missed something in the post cause last I heard you were only able to startup in safemode. Obviously somewhere along the line this cleared up cause you wouldn't have been changing into 256 color mode to do anything.

Probably one of the updates you did, did the deed. Guess this will remain a mystery. You'd be surprised by how many posts end with, "windows seemed to fix itself ".

Not sure about the name change for the ati drivers, but if they work for ya' I wouldn't worry about it unless they start kicking and fussing. Often updated software will also include new function code to improve compatibility with the newer co-api's such as dirrectx, mediaplayer, or any software bundle that may come included with video card. A name change is just a way to help distinguish this version from older drivers.

Glad the problem is cleared up and all seems well though, however this was accomplished. :D

Thank you so much for taking the time to update your post with the final outcome. I'll consider this a "Done Deal ", until next time.....
