    Hi,

    I was playing around with a program called "BootXP ", a boot screen changing program. This may or may not be the cause of a problem I'm having.

    Now, when I reboot, I get a choice of operating systems. There should be only one (XP Pro) and it should not offer me choices.

    Now, I have (beneath the choice of XP) some sort of entry called "Line)" No typo there, folks. It is listed as:

    Line), beneath XP Pro.

    How do I go about seeking this thing out and ridding my PC of this thing? Like I said it just sort of popped up today, many reboots after I played with the program yesterday. Could be completely unrelated.

    Please help????? :(

    Start > Run > type in: msconfig
    Go to the "boot.ini" tab.
    Remove the line. Save, restart.

    BootXP has the option to add another OS choice that uses the default ntoskrnl.exe bootscreen, just in case the BootXP doesn't work and you get locked out of your system.

    My boot.ini file got messed up, too, after doing a repair reinstall, but I added a line to boot.ini to return the default option (just in case).

    Here is how it reads now:
    -------------------------------
    [boot loader]
    timeout=5
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS= "Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /kernel=logoos.exe
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS= "Backup Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
    C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT= "Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons
    --------------------------------
    (The last part about CMDCONS is the Recovery Console. You may not have it.)

    Boot.INI

    Okay,

    This is what it looks like in Sys Conf. Utility under boot.ini

    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS= "Windows XP Media Center Edition" /fastdetect
    (Backup Line)

    I have NO idea how to remove anything here or edit anything.

    Have to step out. I'll check in later in the day.

    Please simplify as best as possible, okay? Thank you.

    You people are just the best!;)

    Just edit the last line out, delete it.
    Your boot.ini should look like this:
    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS= "Windows XP Media Center Edition" /fastdetect
    You can edit the boot.ini in notepad if needed, but you should be able to edit it this way:
    Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
    On the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery.
    Under System Startup, click Edit.

    Abraxas & reboot,

    I am at a loss for words!

    My hat is off to you both. ;)

    The way reboot told me to get at it worked like a charm!:D

    Things is, I do know a fair bit about Windows but "a fair bit" is an extremely relative term. Relative to who? Obviously not to you two and quite a number of people here. I don't know......I guess that experience is the difference. Having experienced this problem, I now know how to help someone else with it.

    So now you're thinking "what loss for words "? :D I guess I should just wrap up by saying that everyone's help here goes a lot farther than just to the original poster. It gets handed down over and over again. Good on you all!;)

    Whatever would I do without this forum?

    Thanx again, you two!

    Afterthought

    Just an afterthought..........

    At the risk of starting a general discussion on this thread, I just have to say something and kind of wonder what all of you think about it.

    I just torture this machine of mine on a daily basis! I really do. I horse around with it like you wouldn't believe. If there's trouble for the asking, I'm into it like a dirty shirt! But......between a washer program, Norton, and carefull use of an extensive registry cleaner, not to mention System Restore & what not, I come out okay at the end of the day. Trial this, game that.....name it and I'm doing it. No fear at all.

    Okay, so the point is that I always tell those who look to me for all the answers to live a little closer to the edge. Take some chances! I tell them that the worst that'll happen is that they'll botch everything up and as long as someone like me will come and unbotch it, it's the best way to learn.

    Is not fear of these machines the largest contributor to ignorance about them?????

    What say you?

    Thanx again.

    I would restate, "Ignorance of these machines is what causes the most fear ".
    People are so afraid to try, then if it fails, off they run to the local shop at $65 or more/hour to get it "fixed ".
    They don't learn anything in the process, except how easy it is to get parted from their money.
    Make a backup, full system if possible, then play. Learn. There is no other way.
    With resources like this on the web, a little research goes a long ways. Of course, if you've botched the machine to the point where you can't go online, then any help site isn't much use.
