    Hello All,

    I posted a problem recently with my icons, Zephyr has tried to help me to no avail. I am have able to get the desktop icons to change to the windosw symbol, but all my programs now have a lnk extension on them and will not open. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to remove this lnk extension from my desktop icons. I am hoping that if I remedy that problem, I can remove the shelliconcache file and hopefully get my icons back. Thanks once again for any and all responses.

    Well, reading through the posts on your previous thread, here are a couple things to try. First, you can't delete your shelliconcache file without being in safemode or in DOS.

    Try going into the registry and HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and locate the .lnk key. Expand the key and determine what type of file it says it is. For instance, the .jpeg value has keys that identify it as a jpegfile and an image/jpeg file. Delete the .lnk key then locate the keys associated with the file type and delete them as well. For instance, for .jpeg, you'd find the keys that say jepgfile and one that says image/jpeg and delete them. After doing this, run the notepad script given to you in the previous version and see if your desktop icons now work. If they do, boot to safemode and delete your shelliconcache. Reboot and you should be all good.

    Hi Swelldom,

    I went into the registry and there is no .lnk key under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.

    From there, I'd rerun the script in the previous thread. It is designed to create the .lnk key in the registry. Run it, and check if it does. If not, you may be better off reinstalling your OS.

    Hi Swelldom,

    I did what you said and it did create the link key. below is what is in it. The file that Zep sent me was a version 4 reg file, win2k is version 5 does that make a difference. below is a capture of what is in the lnk key.

    indows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.lnk]
    @= "lnkfile "

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.lnk\ShellEx]

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.lnk\ShellEx\{000214EE-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}]
    @= "{00021401-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} "

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.lnk\ShellEx\{000214F9-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}]
    @= "{00021401-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} "

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.lnk\ShellEx\{00021500-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}]
    @= "{00021401-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} "

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.lnk\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}]
    @= "{500202A0-731E-11d0-B829-00C04FD706EC} "

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.lnk\ShellNew]
    "Command "= "RunDLL32 AppWiz.Cpl,NewLinkHere %2 "

    Well, what next and thanks for your help.

    With that information in the registry, your desktop icons should start working.....hopefully. If not, please report back details of what is occurring now and we can see what else can be done.

    Alas, I am too late. Oh well, for next time and for anyone else that may have this problem, the solution may be as simple as opening a command prompt windows and typing:

    assoc.lnk=lnkfile <enter>

    I wish I had found this in time for you astone but I had trouble duplicating your problem. When I finally succeeded, the rest was a cake walk. If you want to muck your up again, just open a command prompt and type:

    assoc.lnk=text <enter>

    and it'll look just like it did when you had the problem.

    Cheers. :)
