When I click the disconnect button my modem takes about 45 seconds to hang-up. During this time the keyboard and mouse are sluggish and can cause crashes if used. My other computer works fine so it's not my phone line or ISP. Please advise!
System: Windows 98SE Navigator 7.0 Rockwell HCF 56K Data Fax PCI Modem
    20GB Hard Drive 128 Sdram

Which driver version are you using for your HCF?
Do you have any additional init string(s)?
    Try adding S38=10
This will force a hang up of the modem 10 seconds after the hangup command is recieved.

The modem file version is 2.2.2.164.015. I'll need some help editing the registry, would you mind going into detail? thanks

No need to edit the registry.
Open control panel, modems, properties, advanced, extra settings box. Put in: S38=10
Restart the computer and try it.

From the driver version number, I think this is a Compaq?
If so, get Softpaq 8897 for your modem.
If this is an HP, PB, or Emachine, please get me the model number.
If this is a generic white box, please check http://members.cnx.net/reboot/modems/ and find out the ATi3 response, or pull the case off and see if there's any way to truly identify the manufacturer of the modem. FCC ID#, or name stamped on the modem.

This is a HP 8575C Interrupt 0, Address 3E8, UART NS16550AN, Highest Speed 115K Baud, Identifier PCI\HP433221, Input/output range 03E8-03EF. I hope this helps. thanks

Well, it helps, and it doesn't.
Your problem is that it's a proprietary modem, actually built by HP, with a Rockwell chip.
It's a terribly fussy winmodem, and it shares duty as a sound card as well, known as a "Riptide ".
The only thing I can suggest now, is to get the driver update from www.hp.com and see if that improves anything.
There is something wrong, because there's no such thing as "Interrupt 0 ", so the modem is using a virtual com port.
In theory, if your computer has two onboard com ports, then the modem should be using IRQ (Interrupt) 3 or 4.
Other than completely removing it, and all com ports from device manager, then restarting to see if it gets sorted out, I'm not sure what to suggest. This could cause more problems though, and I'm not even sure that it's a good idea, unless you're confident you can reinstall the modem/sound card correctly.
