    hi all,

I have Alltel DSL shared through a D-Link router with another PC.
My problem is that sometimes the service just disconnects. I thought it was my router because it gets disconnected more often than just connecting straight through my pc. But when I am connecting to the DSL modem via my PC I get disconnected as well, it lasts about an hour longer than just through the router. In my network connection settings I have set the service to never disconnect. Any ideas what I am doing wrong? Or is it an Alltel problem?

    WinXP Home
    1.8GHz AMD XP
    768 MB RAM
    3Com NIC 10/100

    thanks for the help

What OS do you run and does a reset (power off / power on) of the modem get you connected again?

My guess would be a problem with your ISP or the line to your house but no way to tell without some additional informaiton.

running Windows XP SP1 - main PC
    2000 Pro - secondary PC

and yes a reset of the modem and router works to get me connected

BTW my DSL is PPPOE through alltel
( not "always on" as advertised )

    That helps. Thanks.

Do you get disconnected while you are actively working/surfing on the internet or after a period of inactivity?

Also, from a cmd window, do ipconfig /all and see what the lease period for an ip address is from that ISP.

Well - I'm back to my original thought which is a problem somewhere from your modem to your ISP. I'd bug their tech support until they got you fixed. Easier if you keep a log of when it happens - date/time/duration.

The only other possibility that occurs is that you may be caching bad IP address info for DNS servers at your ISP. Easy enough to check. Next time it happens, start~run~ipconfig /flushdns and see if that fixes the problem.

If so, This site (and others) offers a .reg file that will tweak a couple of settings and prevent caching bad record in the future. Probably a good thing to do even if this isn't causing your immediate problem.
