I have just reloaded Windows 98, then Windows 98 SE, and attempted to load XP Professional for the 6th time and without fail when XP trys to load up at the very last step my screen goes black and reads: The file acpi.sys is corrupted. Press any key to continue.

Upon pressing "any key" the same senario plays out with the same error screen at the end. What can I do to get this corrected? Help anyone!!!!!! Thanks in advance and God bless!

Why are you loading 98 first? Upgrades from an entirely different family of Windows is often prone to problems.

Boot from the XP CD, format in NTFS, and install cleanly. If you are sure you have an ACPI-compliant computer, and ACPI is enabled in the BIOS, then you should be fine. But if you are not sure, or want to try installing as a Standard Computer, then press F5 when the message appears on the bottom of the screen to press F6 for RAID. You will then get some options on power modes/HAL's.

    Thanks for the response.

I attempted to load XP Professional directly, but the PC wouldn't recognize the HD for some reason. When I installed Win 98 there was no such problem. Strange, huh? My problem now is the last XP installation I completed will not uninstall and I can't get to a place on the directory to delete it manually. Any ideas? Thanks again!

Catlover - let me make sure I am clear on your situation so far.

    - you booted from the XP CD (full, update, upgrade?)
    - you started the install process
    - the XP install couldn't find any hard drive on your system to partition (if desired) and format

IDE or SCSI drive(s)? And if any of the above is wrong, please correct me.

Thanks for the quick response again!

The problem seems to occur when I attempt to load XP Pro from the original installation disk. It fails to recognize the hard drives. However, when I load Win 98 and SE they have no problem recognizing it (Actually, I have two hard drives on cable select.)

The XP has seemingly no problem finding the hard drives after I have loaded Win 98, but the final installation ends with the message "ansi.sys corrupted ", and instructs me to restart the machine - which seems to be in a loop mode because I can't unload XP nor load the previously installed Win 98 which should still be there. Sorry to be such a problem to you! Thanks again in advance!!

Sounds like your problems are bigger than ours :( .

Can you give minute details about your system and exactly how you are trying to install XP.

Have you tried the floppy option and does a 98/ME bootdisk recognize the HD?

How old is your BIOS? Ever had Linux on your drive?

Have you tried setting the drives to master/slave and not Cable Select?

Is it ansi.sys or acpi.sys or both?

    Etc., etc.

(ansi.sys has as one function the mapping of extended keys. If you have an OEM keyboard, try using a generic one. Yours may require OEM drivers.)
