SOUND CARD PROBLEM. I have a Packard Bell type X86 based PC. Opperating system windows ME. The problem I have is that I lose all sound whenever I switch my computer off and on. I can get the sound back by going online and downloading the latest driver i.e. following the instructions in control panel, system etc. The sound card driver is an Intel(r)AC97 Audio Controller-Sigma Tel Codec. Can anyone help?

    Hi Aberhosen
Welcome to the boards! Sorry your post slipped by. Were you able to resolve this? Have you been into your device manager looking for any relevant splats? (exclamation points)

As for exclamation marks, I can download the sound card driver but every time I switch off my comp. I lose the sound. For the time being I am leaving my comp. switched on. Not ideal, and some download programs require the comp. to be switched off to complete the download.

    Hi aberhosan
I'm not quite sure I follow. Do you have yellow exclamation marks in your device manager?
Perhaps boot into safe mode, go to yoru device manager, remove all entries to your sound card, and reboot. Letting windows re-detect it?
Once you've got it cleaned out, perhaps then go and update the driver?

Hi Daizy, thanks for your help, after booting up I have no sound, I go to device manager, there is yellow exclamation mark along side sound card info. I click on sound card then properties then drivers, then update driver, I get the massage updating driver online. When that is completed I usually have my sound back. reference your advice, I have tried removing all soundcard info and reinstalling, didn't work. I havent tried booting up in safe mode simply because I dont know how, can you guide me through the process please.

    Hi again aberhosan
Reboot your computer. Immediately start holding down your CTRL key....until you're given a menu, you use safe mode. Then go back into your device manager, and remove all entries under your sound.

Let's try this from another angle.
Is this your sound driver? If so, download it to somwhere you'll remember, on your hard drive.

If not... Take a gander here for it?

What is the version of the driver you have?
The one I found for Windows 98 1st Edition, is: 4.10.01.0036A

When you go into your device manager, right click on the driver...and choose properties.

Hi Daizy, I have just thought of something, I dont know if it is revalent but a little while ago the factory fitted modem was destroyed by a lightning strike. A local computer shop fitted a new modem, a different modem. This one is a Conexant HCF V.92 56k Speakerphone PCI. The soundcard did work for a while after this installation though, so I doupt if this is the cause of my problems

Hi Daizy, I have a little more information, the driver I keep getting when I try to reinstall is listed as a Intel(r) 82801AA AC'97 Audio Controller-Sigma Tel Codec version 002. This does not work. If I persist and try over and over I finally get the one that does work. The Intel(r) AC'97 Audio Controller-Sigma Tel Codec version002. Both of these drivers drop out of my system each time I swich off and on. Please dont give up on me Daizy, you are the chance I have.
