I've been using Norton 2002 for some time without any problems. Then I had to reinstall it some time ago and now I have all sort of trouble with Norton family.First I couldn't update the programs but only virus and security updates. Then I've decided to install the whole Systemworks 2003 and now I cannot see antivirus in the update list and cannot run full scan(it says Antivirus\task\sca. file is missing) and at restart Norton says that Illegal program it trying to change the system setting wich might be a virus or attacker.Doesn't sound too happy to me and I don't know exactly how to tackle that.Any help will be appriciated.

    Hi Alex
First thing I'd suggest, for elimination purposes, would be to do the free online virus scan from Housecall.. Once that comes back clean, it's time to start fresh and uninstall Norton's.
    Then try installing again.

    better this time

Hi,Daizy! It's better this time! After enabling longpathname for files and reinstalling it works. The only thing which I cannot understand is why I can update all the virus and security definitions but not the actual program. The error message just gives me my OS and software details and that's it.Any ideas?

    Sorry Alex Kransky
I wish I had more info for you. I, too, went round and round with Norton's, until I finally gave in and went to AVG

Are you sure the message wasn't 'This program has committed an illegal operation and will be shut down' ? An illegal operation is not referring to an virus or any other kind of attack. It is one program trying to write to memory occupied by another program. Since this is happening at windows startup, and Norton starts at windows startup..., you have a bad install of Norton. You could uninstall Norton, delete the folder it resided in, then run Regcleaner and remove all Symnatec and Norton entries, then run the cleaner at Tools\Registry Cleaner\Do Them All. If you still want to use Norton, install it after all this is done.

    Better this time.

    Hi,Mark!
I'm getting better this time!i had to enable the 'longfilename' in the registry and only after that I manage to get Norton working sort of OK,although I still cannot update the programs.People from Symentec said that I need to do what I've just done,so I don't really know where to go from here unless there's something else that I've changed in the registry or 'longfi...' just doesn't work properly and I'm sure how to verify that.
    Thanx for your help, Al.

I had similiar problem at a customer. The bad news is to format then reinstall all & then Norton, for it worked.

    Best of luck.

If it wasnt for "BG" we would be very bored with nothing todo' :D

The problem started with the uninstall. Norton is a bear to uninstall properly and causes grief if not entirely done.

After the 'Uninstall ", you need registry cleaners and then must manually do a search of the system looking for Symantec/Norton to remove totaly.

    Regards - Charles
