Somehow I must have deleted or corrupted a file at start up. I get a message in DOS that ios0.vxd no longer exists.Although it is shown in system INI . Uninstall associated program VSdata95.VXD and restart computer. Press any key and it will start with no problem but I must always go through this step.
I can't figure out how to do it search does not find it. I reinstalled Windows98 Se on top of it's self but with the same result.

Have you recently uninstalled ZoneAlarm? If so, reinstall it and this error message will disappear. If you still want to ditch ZoneAlarm, there are other methods to prevent this error from cropping up.

    Cheers. :)

I did recently uninstall Zone alarm. Since I am using a router Zone alarm was too much of a pain. Could I reinstall Zone alarm and the un install it again?

It's not generally that easy. There are several issues with ZoneAlarm. Don't get me wrong, it's great freeware but in order to cover all the bases, it has some uninstall problems. It's so good most people don't care since they don't intend to uninstall it anyway.

You have a couple of easy options. Reinstall ZA and then remove it from the startup group. All will be well.

2nd option, reinstall ZA and find the file named VSdata95.VXD and copy it to your Desktop. (Remember where it was when you copied it.) Then uninstall ZA and immediately copy the vsdata95.vxd file back to where you found it.

Granted, that's a cop out but it seems to be easier than any other solutions available.

Personally, I'd keep ZA and not start it if I didn't want it. There are better battles than are more productive. You may need it one day anyhow.

    Cheers. :)

Ha, I reinstalled it and I still get the same notice at start up.. I wish I could send a screen shot, but I do not see how.I shall quote what is on the screen.
"The widows registry or system ini file refers to this device but the device file no longer exists.
If you deleted this file on purpose try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or set up program Try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file ios0.vxd press a key to continue ". I may have accidently done what they say. I am not sure.

Is ios0.vxd a zone alarm driver?

    Could it be this unstead?

If so perhaps this will help:

    ===============
The above links are only meant as a reference to see if this application jogs your memory. I don't know if this driver is indeed part of this program or some oem type driver memory manager.

While the registry edit is easy enough to do and undo with proper backup, don't jump into this with both feet until you can confirm you did not need this driver. You may need to go to your OEM support site and do a search for a reference to this driver and make sure it is not a default driver used in some way by your computer. [Just me being cautious when swimming in unknown waters].

I wonder if this driver can be downloaded and merely copied back in.

You may also like to take a peek at your autoexec.bat and config.sys files to see if there's any old load lines referencing a program you have uninstalled such as the one mentioned in the link I previously put up.

Man, I got lost on this one. I can't safely follow all the steps. I did uninstall it and I went to c, program files and deleted all references to Zone alarm, but that did nothing and I am too chicken to try anything more dangerous than that, At least dangerous for this old geezer. Thanks anyway.
I will try to reconstruct what dummy did.AS I recall, last week I did a reboot after a problem and it started in the scan disk mode. For some dumb reason I hit cancel as it had started. From then on, I have the problem, undoubtaby it is of my own doing, Sometimes I just don't think thing out. I was in a hurry. Ha!!

    Hi Geezer,
Since we seemed to be in typing mode at similar times you may have missed my post.

Did the program application, the links mentioned, seem to apply to this missing driver problem "ios0.vxd "???

    Curious.

TaDa!!! I did it. With trembling fingers I went into the registry and followed the instructions exactly and fixed it. You folks are terrific. Thanks very much. I am still shaking.
