Every time I click Start->Shut down, the following Blue Screen pop up, saying:
A fatal exception OE has occured at 017F:BFF9DFFF. The current application will be terminated.

Can anyone tell me what happened? Many thanks!:) :) :)

    Hi Wing
Welcome to the boards. This is going to be a bit of a tough one to track down. Can you tell us when this started happening? Have you switched out Ram lately? There are a few that report bad ram as the cause, is the reason I ask?

    Daizy

    *edit*
Have you gone to windows updates and checked to see if there's a driver update for a promise controller card?

If Daizy's suggestion doesn't do it for you; just prior to an attempt to normally shut down, do a ctrl-alt-del to see what current program is running. Manually delete that program and then try to shut down. The problem should be the top app. that is the cause, or its interaction. This procedure should give you some visibility to what may be the problem.

KenKeith did not mean to literally delete the program. I believe he meant to say endtask.

You may be able to narrow the field down to which application may be causing the shutdown down glitch by using the cntl/alt/del_ "ending the task" method. Once you have closed the culprit and are able to do a successful shutdown you'll know if one of these running apps is the problem.

    Thanks Daisy and Ken.
I've checked the Windows updates but there is no driver update for me.
The problem happened a few days ago but I didn't do anything or install anything prior to it. I just downloaded some word documents from my friend a few days before.
But I noticed something strange besides not able to shut down. Sometimes I open a folder, a dialog box pop up saying "Work offline. The internet content on your computer........." then there is two buttons: one for "work offline" and the other for "try again "

  But I'm not sure what is "switched out Ram lately ", can you explain a bit Daisy? thanks!:p

When I do ctrl-alt-del, more than 10 programs are in the dialog box. I 'm not sure which to shut down.

Have you done a full virus scan? As far as the ram goes, if you dont know what they are referring to, then you didnt do it..

KenKeith's advice is highlight the very top program, click end task. Then try a normal shutdown. Post back good or bad.

Search the archive files for references to shutdown problems. Find the ones with instructions for eleiminating unnecessaary startup apps [those loaded at starup and sitting in your systray].
They will also include links to ad-aware which another good application cleaner to run.

Sublinks included in these will help to explain why this is a good thing.

I'd do the prescreen search for ya' but I'm trying to watch a movie even as we speak. If you come up empty handed or others have not expanded on this thread, I will return to be more specicfic and offer the links you need.

10 background running applications is a "large window of opportunity for conflicts ".

    Hang in there......

    Okay...

Grabbed this one real fast. May not be the best one but it has most of the pertinent nfo, instructs, facts and sublinks you'll need.

May have to do some clicking and some thinking so if there is anything included in the sublinks that you may be confused or unclear about just append to post and I or another will be most happy to help.....

goddez1 ...Thanks for drawing attention to the termonology. In cyper lingo "delete" has a specific meaning and that is to remove program files from the computer core. "End task" will remove app from RAM and that is the correct procedure and what I meant. Big difference, sorry.

Wing, I can't add anything to what has been advised. Hope it solves your problem.

    OK!

Wing more than likely you have Spy/Adware so lets get rid of them.

But first lets do a deep cleaning. This is not as complicated as it seems. Not counting time to download should take only 10 minutes.

    Step 1.
    Configure CleanMgr to max settings
    Go to Start-Run and type

    cleanmgr /sageset:1
The above need only be ran once (these settings will be remembered as the default until another sageset is ran).

It will present a menu select all except compress, then

    Go to Start-Run and type

    cleanmgr /sagerun:1
As long as /sageset above has been ran on this computer from now on the /sagerun is the only thing that needs to run.

    Step 2.

    Cleanups
These are for 95 98 ME only!
Boot to DOS (not shutdown to DOS). While booting hit F8 to startup menu. Chose "command prompt only ".

    Type these commands

del c:\*.swp (may get file not found, is ok)
    del c:\windows\*.swp
    deltree c:\windows\shelli*.*
deltree c:\windows\temp\*.* (answer yes to all) "ALL "
    deltree c:\windows\tempor~1\*.*
    deltree c:\windows\history\*.*
    deltree c:\windows\spool\printers\*.*

    Step 3.

Download and install but do not run these. To run them for the 1st time boot to safe mode run them. Later if needed this may not be nessesary.

    Spyware and adware removal

    SpyBot http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download
Run this twice delete all it finds, always run this before AdAware

    AdAware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/downloads.html
    Delete all it finds

    BHO Demon http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm
This program runs stand alone no install is required post me the items it finds.

After booting back to Windows then a scan & defrag.

    Get back to us!

    Mike

Which Version of 98 is being used ? I ask this cause with the Original Win98 this was an often occurring problem for me. Have not had it with 98 SE.

Also is there a possibility that you have Norton Anti-Virus and have it set to check the floppy at shutdown ? I have one machine that, that will not allow me to shutdown no matter what I do. The other two it is fine.

To check this just stick a floppy in the drive. If that fixes the problem OK. If it don't then back to the drawing board.

If you are indeed referring to EXPLORER, ( not IEXPLORE ) it had better be reported as busy. That can not and should not be shut down. It is a required system file. If it does by chance shutdown you may loose your Desktop. And/or Windows may not shutdown anyway. Or get other strange reactions.

The problem program may or may not be the top one in Cntrl-Alt-Del. Right now on my machine " WindowsBBS Reply to Topic Windows Internet Explorer " is the top one.

My ScreenSaver Switch is next down. Then EXPLORER. Then three other items. The last being Systray. ( which should not be shutdown either )

If nothing else, Explorer and Systray are required to be loaded by the system at bootup.

I do not like writing this but a couple of times it required a re-install ( overtop from a DOS disk bootup ) of the OS to fix this problem.

    I've followed Mike's instructions.
The BHO Demon found the following:
    BDHELPER.DLL
    But I can't run a defragment on drive C.
    This dialog box pops up:
    Line 2239 of module drive.cpp
    Drive space assertion

Then I press the OK button and another dialog box saying:
Windows caanot defragment this drive now because it has been locked by a disk utility. Quit any utilities that may have locked this drive and then try degragmenting the drive again.
    ID No: DEFRAG00105

I'm using a windows98SE. Any other suggestions? And what will happen if my problem is not fixed? Thanks

Wings have you used the ancent doublespace or drivespace to compress this drive to get more space?

Have you seen references to a "compressed volume file "?

Do not worry about defrag untill the original problem is fixed!

Clarify: Did you run all of the steps I gave or just the BHODEMON?

Run BHO demon again hilite this entry then click details then click to disallow it to run for now.

Give us a status (besides the defrag) of what does and does not work now?

    Mike

I will be away on errands for a couple hours.

    Wing,
That problem may be explained by a setting. If you have work offline enabled for an on-line file, the system will automatically synchronize current online data to your off line work. It can be synchronize when logging "on" or "off ". And depending on the circumstances you may be prompted regarding work offline.

On my system (XP) desktop, I have shortcuts to files on the internet, and I can rt click on the icon to enable work offline. It has been awhile since I had Win 98, so I can't assist with the procedure, but your help section should have more information.

You state you have Iexplore.exe running when the problem occurs, and working offline does directly involve IE during the synchronizing process. The fact you cannot properly shutdown indicates the system's inability to close a running program, but you manually clear RAM one program at a time and the problem remains. Very strange problem! Don't throw in the towel, BillyBob usually comes up with a solution.

Do you have Norton System works? If you do this is the cause of the defrag problem. And probably also the shutdown problem.

    But lets handle that seperately.

Give us a clarrification of what is and is not working besides the defrag.

    is this fixed?

    Quote:
    Can't shut down by Windows
Every time I click Start->Shut down, the following Blue Screen pop up, saying:
A fatal exception OE has occured at 017F:BFF9DFFF. The current application will be terminated.
    Unqoute.

I Checked and all of my Favorites have " make available off line " in the Right click drop down menu.

:) Somebody is dreaming again. :)

    Wing

Do you or did you ever have Norton Utilities ( also part of System Works ) installed and had the Norton Protection for the Recycle Bin Enabled ?

If so and it was not shut down properly it will also cause problems for defrag and scandisk. Especailly if a long file name is envolved.
