If your XP home was the upgrade, try changing your cluster size from 512K to 4M using a 3rd party utility (like Partion Magic). Next, if you have an Intel processor - go to
    http://support.intel.com/support/chipsets/iaa/
and update your drivers. I did both with my cable modem and the difference was like night to day!:)

Oops. Cluster resizing should have been 512 to 4K. I guess bigger is better but that was misleading!

rbandy1 - LOL, I liked your 4Mb clusters better. Wouldn't get much on a hard drive but that sucker wouldn't fragment any time soon either.

    Maybe just an idea but;

When you download files what does it show for speeds ?

If it shows anything for 4 to 6 you ain't gonna get anything better out of a 56K Dial up Modem. In fact you are doing quite well.

When and if you find out why it may be slow let me know. My Daughter has a Sony with XP Home and a ( supposedly ) 56K Modem and it WILL NOT connect at anything above33.6 She has changed ISPs had it in the shop and still no joy. I could not lift the hood to make sure it was a 56K cause she is 1200 miles away and the machine is under warrenty anyway.

Plus I have heard from many sources that XP prefers External Modems. Externals are better on most any OS anyway.

    Thanks billybob,

I consistently clocked on at 45kbps and even reached 48 with my previous tower....but with this new tower Pent4/2gig..XP home ona a Asus P4B533 mob
with an internal Win Lucent 56k modem can only get a 33.6 connection so far.

I will look in to the download speed and get back on it.

That is the report that I sort of expected. Same as my Daughters machine.

My suggestd fix would be to get and External. I think you would find it $$ well spent.

    billybob,

    I'm probably averaging between 3-4

HOWEVER....my previous connections of 45-48 were with an internal modem......just so happens that it was a different modem and on a different PC.

This upgrade has not helped to improve performance in that area.

Perhaps I was most fortunate previously to connect at those figures so have accepted them to be the norm.

Therefore...unless I was given an ironclad guarantee back up with a comensation factor I would not spend the additional money for an external...especially as I am frantically saving for a trip to the U.S. for May-July this year and our exchange rate is only about .58 to your $

    Nice talking to ya

That will do it a lot of times.

If you bought the machine already assembled ( OEM ) I would raise some sort of Hell. And I mean it. MY daughter is trying too. And I do not blame her one bit.

And if it were me I would be too because I know it does not need to be.

At lot of the Internal Modems installed in OEM machines are of the quite often the troublesome WinModem type.

I you were not half a world away I would pack up my old USR 56K external and ship it to you FREE of charge. That thing has been on at least six different machines and no less than 5 different OS. In at least three different homes. I don't know how many ISPs. And I hooked it up the other day and got 50K connection.

BTW. I just happen to remember. My other Daughter just bought a Dell. If she had not been planning on going to cable you would have more than likely heard her way over there. 56K modem and only 33.6 connection. I stuck my External on and BINGO !! 50K.

Hawk22 is in your country too. Lets see if he jumps in here about modems over there.

Why do you think I dumped XP ? NOTHING was improved. Except use of disk space. That improved by app 3 times as much.

It should be and be accepted as the norm. If the old one did it the new one should too.

    BillyBob,

Thanks for givin me what for and stirring me into action.

I have had the technicians exchange modems for me (free) and this is my first connection and it it showing up as 48kbps as against the previous 33.6 and my first download of 2.09MB came in at 4.37KB/Sec
    Hopefully it wasn't a fluke.

Just thought you'd like to know.

    Once again..thanks for the shove.
