    Hi All,

Hope you can help as this problem is very frustrating!

Often when i shut down or restart my pc, it will "lock" on the Windows XP screen " saving your settings ".

I have left it for hours before and the only way to switch it off is by holding the power button on the front of the tower.

I dont know whether its a related problem but i often have "aoltray.exe" and " Norton Antivirus" not responding when i try to shut down the pc.

My system is a Packard Bell P4 1.5 Ghz 256mb RAM 40 gig HD.

Windows XP with all updates installed and AOL 7.0 as ISP.

    Many thanks for any help.

Use msconfig (start|run|msconfig) to disable startup programs (startup tab) individually until you find the one causing the problem. It sounds like a startup item is not loading properly, thus is unable t shutdown properly. I would start by disabling aoltray first. Do a restart, confirm it did not launch, then try to shutdown. Move to Norton next if problem is still there. Reinstall which ever program is the issue. Be sure to diable/close as many systray items as possible before installing something.
