I had the 2GB hard drive from my old machine installed on my 'new' machine when I got it over a year ago. I just did a 'clean' re-install of Win98SE, i.e. I formatted the 20 GB C drive. When I re-installed Win98 it didn't recognize the old D drive and assigned that to my CD-RW and E to my CD. How do I go about getting Win98 to recognize the old drive as D and the CD's as E and F again (as it was before the re-install)?

    Thanks in advance

It sounds as if the partition table has become corrupt on the old 2-Gig drive. What does FDisk tell you about the secondary disk?

Don't I have to run Fdisk from DOS? And if the machine doesn't recognize the drive how can I run FDisk?

FDisk only sees the one 20 GB disk.

Have you checked your BIOS settings to be sure the IDE controller it is on is enabled? Also, be sure the position it is on is enabled (master/slave). If you have the drive on the same controller (ribbon cable) as another IDE device, one needs to be jumpered as Slave and the other as Master.

    ALex,
I am flattered that you think I have a clue what you are talking about, but... Actually, I do know what those things are and I know that in the original config there was a master and a slave (just like here at home). I just don't know how to go about checking or changing those things.

    Belay my last

    Alex,
You shamed me into getting my user's manual out and actually reading it. Somehow, during the reinstall things must have been changed in the BIOS. It wasn't by me and I didn't think even Microsoft was that nefarious. ANyway, I figured things out and reset the 'masters and slaves' to auto and all appears well now.

    Thanks for your help
    :D
