I have a new computer and I am tring to install Windows
2000 on it from a legit upgrade 2000 CD. I am having the
following problems trying to install it.

    1. Ran setup from 2000 cd and everything goes fine until
it tries to install the Windows 2000 files and I come up
    with screens saying:
dbghelp.dll was not copied correctly. The file setup
placed on your hard drive was not a valid Windows 2000
system image. press enter to continue, press f-3 to abort
or press esc to skip file.
it also deos this with 4 or 5 other files, another being
    regedit.exe. I have 2 different Windows 2000 CD's both are
legit and they do the same thing. My computer is a AMD
Duron XP1400, 256 ram, CDBurner. I have tried FAT file
setup and NTSF file setup with the same results.

    Any Help? Thank you

Have you tried copying the I386 folder to the hard disk and running setup from there (winnt.exe)?

Could also be caused by bad/incompatible RAM. Try removing/swapping out/reseating/replacing modules if you can.

What unixfan is suggesting is that you copy the entire folder 'i386' from the Win2000 cd to your hard drive (eg c:\I386\)
and then kick off the install by running the file c:\I386\winnt.exe. You could do this by booting to a dos prompt first, but perhaps you can do it in Windows if you are upgrading (from Win98?). Check your documentation!

By 'swapping out modules' unixfan is suggesting you remove and reset your memory cards from the motherboard, or replace them with ones which are known to work. The link he (?!) provided will allow you to carry out diagnostic tests of the memory you have installed.

Does that help? Try these approaches and report back results!

    Good luck!

Dont want to sounf like a nob but since I last responded I got 2000 to install after installing Win95 first. Problem then is that the computer hangs on the white W2K "starting up screen ". Would swapping known good memory and trying a new formatted install work or worth the try. Thanks alot!!!

Well, I only have experience of reformatting and full installs of Windows. I've never upgraded from version to version. It sounds like you're prepared to trash your disk and reformat, so why not, unless you're trying to preserve data between versions? That assumes you've got a full version and not an 'upgrade only', if such a thing exists. If you can't boot after a format/install; then is the time to start looking at memory and other hardware issues. If your precious data is backed up then go for it!

    One more thought:

You say it hangs at screen when starting. How long did you wait? You may have to wait a few minutes, up to 5-10 minutes, depending on the speed of your computer and hard drive itself.

    Hi There,
Did a format and install with known good memory. She still hangs on the white start screen. Left it sit there overnight and still hangs there. The little blue blocks never start either(make sense) Dont know where to go from here so any help or suggestions a plus. I did install Win95 a few tries ago and it worked fine if that helps you.
