I'm running Windows 98 (with current critical updates and service packs installed). I recently updated from Internet Explorer 5.0 to Internet Explorer 6.0.

Now every time I start the PC, I get this message: "Setup has detected you are running a version of Windows that already includes the updated files or enhancements you are attempting to install."

Obviously, I am not trying to install anything at that point. When I click Details, I get "You are attempting to install IE version 5.0 or earlier..." Which I am not.

Hitting "Hide This Message" does not work. It cycles through several more of these same messages until I get: "Desktop could not load or run 'iexplore.exe' specified in the win.ini file. Make sure the file exists on your computer or remove the reference to it in the win.ini file. "

I removed the reference in win.ini; no improvement. I checked that the file exists, and it does. Even tried adding the path for iexplore.exe to autoexec.bat. No change.

Please tell me there is something I can do to fix this so I don't get these messages at startup.

    Thanks, Monica

I believe I would uninstall IE6, and get back to your original configuration and start over.

A reinstall might do it. Barring that, I would use poledit or regedit to look in the register. Sounds like some remant is hanging in there somewhere.
