I recently upgraded my computer and gave the older one to my son to replace the computer only in his very old Gateway 2000 system. His resulting combination (my old computer and the old Gateway monitor) has a problem. The colors available are limited to 2 and 16 and the resolution is low and not adjustable. I've downloaded and installed two or three monitor drivers, replacing the W98 generic, with no luck. In the old Gateway 2000 system several color options were available as well as resolution settings.
What can I do to restore the color and resolution options?

On his computer, in Control Panel/System, remove the display adapter and then reboot. Let Windows find the most suitable adapter.

To close this one out: I found the correct driver(s) for the VGA and now the situation is back to normal with delections available for resolution and colors.

Hi, where did you go to get the drivers? I went to the manufacture and downloaded the driver they had but it does not help. I have 16 or 2 colors after a re-install. thanks

I knew it was an ATI graphics adapter and I had downloaded drivers from their website that didn't work. I finally located the CD that came with the computer and installed from that and it works fine. I suspect the drivers from the website were newer than the adapter, since it was a relatively old computer; it came loaded with W95.

i still don't know which drivers for the card is correct. i printed out the list from the driver cd that came with my computer, but i can't find one that matches any of the info i have. i also found that i had to download a driver and change a line in the system.ini from the printed material, which i have done. i have removed the card a wrote down everything that was on it, but no luck. i managed to download the driver for the monitor by going to emc which is now called proview. but no luck on the card. this is everything i found on the card. serial num-ci7891200249952, and this was on the chips 0316169ct3c---10h88h5385---ibm 5352--733053902q
standard pci graphics adaptor vga. i also did a search on ibm. but couldn't find anything that matched. i at the point where i am going to buy a new video card so i know what the driver is. ithought i was well planned when i started by printing out everything i could think of using printscreen. the one thing that doesn't work, i don't have. isn't that how it always is?
