finetuner--Every time you delete your cache (Temporary Internet Files) you will lose those customized icons that appear when you create some Favorites unless you take some steps to associate the custom icons to the Favorites permanently. Two methods are in this thread

    How I fixed it:

Go to Favorites, go to the ones without the right logo
    Right click
    Properties
    Change Icon
    and find the URL.DLL in system32 (on win2k it's in C:\WINNT\system32\url.dll)

No idea why that link does not work (I can get there by going to VirtualDr site) so I will try posting again

    http://discussions.virtualdr.com/Forum9/HTML/003996.html

but here are the two most important posts from it.
1)You can keep/retrieve those icons with the following procedure.
Create a Favicons folder (like C:\Favicons).
Do a Find on favicon*.ico. Whatever icons you have collected since the last time you deleted your TIF will show up. Each will have the name favicon*.ico where the * is a number. In the Find window right click on an icon and left click on Rename. Give it a name related to whatever site it is the icon for. Then drag and drop (or if you have Send To set up) to move or copy the icon to that C:\Favicons folder. Repeat for each icon you want to keep.
Now right click on a Favorite in the Favorites list, click Properties, Change Icon, and in the next window type in C:\Favicons\name-of-icon.ico.
Click OK twice, click Apply and OK in the next window. Now that Favorite is associated with an icon in your C:\Favicons folder and you won't lose it when you clean your cache.
If you want to go back and get all the old icons you have lost, recreate a Favorite just for the purpose of getting the icon to download again. After going through the above procedure you can delete the new, duplicate Favorite.

    2)Use third party program
    FavOrg : http://www.webattack.com/get/favorg.shtml

Being a basic lazy... I found the little program FavOrg was great. It took care of the job with no problems and it is free. Thanks again.

I searched and I have no favicon.ico file? Maybe they didn't make on for XP?

Also the third party program doesn't show to be used with Windows XP, has anyone used it with XP?

    Thanks

    arkie--Don't confuse a favicon.ico file with a Favicon folder.
You have to create the Favicons folder. (See my post "1)You can keep/retrieve those icons with the following procedure.
Create a Favicons folder (like C:\Favicons)." You do that with a right click whereever you want to put the folder and choose "New" and rename.)
Now, if you can find nothing when you do a Start|Find|Files or Folders on favicon*.ico (a file), then you have not downloaded any icon files when you created recent Favorites. Not every website creates/downloads a favicon.ico file when you create a Favorite. One that does, if you want to test all this, is www.msn.com.

No, I wasn't confused with that part... I had already created the Favicon folder. I also have 22 recent downloaded Favorites that have icons. But there is no favicon.ico file.

I don't understand how to get the icons into my Favicon folder?

    :)

arkie--Do a Find on favicon*.ico (see the asterisk?). If you do not find any, then you have not downloaded any in the process of creating a Favorite since the last time you deleted your cache.
Again, create a Favorite from www.msn.com and see if you can find a favicon*.ico.
(P.S. You will not find a favicon.ico file unless you create it.)

    Jim:

Like I said in the above post I have 22 favorites showing a "Custom" icon for each one. [I have many other favorites that show the default IE icon] I created a new favorite using www.msn.com. I now have 23 favorites showing custom icons. I did a search on favicon*.ico..... shows no results?

I still wonder if this is something about XP? I have looked in the temporary internet files but it doesn't show any icons.
