I appear to have lost my sound schemes I have checked in Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices Properties and my sound scheme is there and upon checking the allocated sounds they all play okay within this window, but when I actually go to use them I do not get any sound at all, for example, Recycle Bin, Incoming Mail etc.

I have checked that no sounds are muted in the volume panel also checked the sound card and all is okay, I can hear sound okay in videos and other applications so it seems that all is okay apart from the Windows sound schemes will not play.

I also tried the windows default scheme but this had the same effect.

Any idea's where I should look would be helpful.

Hi - I tried a search in Windows Xp Help and Support under "sound" got 1 or 2 ideas that sound close to your problem.

    Let us know.

I'm assuming you did at search for "sound" on the opening page of Help and Support, upper left of screen.

This what it shows, perhaps the first two choices.

Sound Troubleshooter What problem are you having?

1> I do not hear sound from my computer's speakers or headphones.
2> A sound appears to play, but I do not hear anything.
3> A sound plays, but then stops suddenly.
4> The sound skips or misses in some areas.
5> The sound is distorted or scratchy.
6> The computer stops responding when a sound plays.
7> The computer restarts when a sound plays.
    8> I receive a sound-related error message.

Other than this I don't know. I'll look somemore and if I find anything will post back.

Yes I did see the list, but this only refer to a complete loss of sound but my sound card is working perfectly in all applications it is the Windows System Sound Events that do not work (even the windows default sound library fails to play).

It may be a problem with a registry setting, but I can find no documentation on this.

    No Sound Events Are Played.

The specific article is in the 2K section of online help but my guess is that XP can have the same problem.

Well, Newt, I don't know about the OP, but I had an entry in the root of HKCU (these usually come from Corel, apparently, and I recently installed CorelDraw).

I've been searching for a solution for my lost sound scheme for a while, thinking it was the fault of the many reg cleaners I had tried.

Apparently, your fix applies to XP as well. There should be no entries in the root. It worked immediately, without restart.

    Thanks :) .

Good to know it works. Now if I can just remember the dang fix next time somebody posts with that problem.

I have finally managed to make my PC just shut up and not ding or dong or boing me with any events. I call my sound scheme "Silence is wonderful" and hope I never lose it. :D

I use a scheme creatively named "Minimal ". But, nevertheless, it bothered me when I knew I couldn't turn the sounds on when I wanted. Silence is golden, especially if you stay up late at night ;) .

Addendum: Removing that key did not, in fact, eliminate the entry in the HKCU root. It was automatically replaced by:
    (default) REG_SZ (value not set).
The fix continues to work, however.

Thank you, that reg fix also worked for me as well, I had a default entry (not "No Name ") and when I went to delete it, it remained but it worked my sounds are back.

    Just FYI............

Corel is not the only culprit in this problem. It seems the majority of people with this problem have recently installed NeroMix.

    Hi all

I'm brand new to this board, but I just wanted to tell you that I have searched all over the Internet to find the solution to this same sound problem. I came across your board this morning, found this fix, tried it out and bingo...it worked like a charm. You guys are great. And by the way, it WAS NeroMix that got me in this mess to start with. I had since removed the program and every instance of "Ahead ", "Nero ", and "InCd" that I found in the registry, but this one didn't referance any of those...just snuck in there. Well, gotta go turn off these Windows sounds now...they're driving me nuts!!! :D ...Thanks a bunch.
