I have downloaded pictures from my digital camera Canon A40. Transferred these photos to another folder but when I go to open them I get 'not a valid win 32 application'
However they will open with the preview or edit application.

What app do you have set to open picture files?

    Good Question.

All I can say is that I download the pictures from my Canon A40 using their software Canon Zoom Browser.

I give each photo a name/title and then save it in a folder for canon photos.

I can open the photos from the Zoom Browser but the ones transferred to the Canon Folder are not recognised I get the 'not a valid win 32 application'
Sorry, but the rest is beyond me and so it seems is Win XP at this stage.....too many years with Win98 and too old for change...maybe....though I know I'll get there eventually.

Try downloading Irfanview. One of the install options will let you click to have it set as the default viewer for all picture types. Select that one.

I like Irfanview for a default picture viewer but in your case, it has a nice feature of telling you if the header information within the supposed picture file is bad or if you have a file with one extention that is really another sort of picture.

Try it on some of your problem pics and see what happens.

And while you are getting the app, you might as well get all the plug-ins just incase you decide you like it and want to keep it around.

Thanks Newt, I have used Infraview before and found it to be a useful tool....I have downloaded XnView and am currently working with it, however this does not give correction to the issue I've raised.

For instance......I can send a picture to desktop but can not open it by clicking on it, however if I use the right click and try the options it will open.

I've right clicked the said desktop/photo icon, got into properties and it says it opens with canon pictures....which of course it doesn't.

Anyhow I have nominated the XnView for opening and that has sorted it out.

Thank you very much for your time and patience.
