I am using Netscape Communicator 4.78. I was having a problem when I receive and send e-mail attachments that have .jpg or .gif, files already being opened instead of having to click on the file. In Preferences I have Forwarding and Replying to Messages/by default, forward messages: As Attachment(not Inline). I have "View Attachments Inline" unchecked. After I was asked if I had both my settings set to NOT 'inline', I looked again and sure enough the drop down box wasn't, and yet I knew I had set it to NOT. I started doing a little experimenting and finally found what I believe has been causing this problem.

What I learned was that if I check "View Attachment Inline" within an opened mail, it has to be unchecked from within that same mail. If left checked and I close that mail, and then uncheck it from the Inbox, it will stay unchecked when I view other mail. But...when I close Netscape down completely, and then bring it back up and go to my mail, the "View Attachment Inline" in the Inbox and the mail will be checked again (I supposed by default).

I assume this is a user error fixed and that I will just have to be more vigilant in my checking and unchecking, but didn't want to give up on it until I found out if there is some way to get this setting to stay.

Hello Marjoh, and welcome to the Forum!

In Preferences I have Forwarding and Replying to Messages/by default, forward messages: As Attachment(not Inline). I have "View Attachments Inline" unchecked.

Those are the correct settings for sending a file as an attachment (not viewed).

I recreated your problem by disabling View Attachments Inline in both Preferences and Messenger. I sent myself an email with a .gif file attached.

With that email open, I enabled View Attachments Inline both in Preferences and Messenger. Then closed Netscape. When I opened Netscape, then Messenger... the setting was still intact.

I have to assume there is a problem with your prefs.js file. Check to see if this line is in your file:

    Close Netscape:
    Open Notepad, click on File|Open
    Browse to:
    C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\yourusername

Look for this line in the prefs.js file:
    user_pref( "mail.inline_attachments ", false);

Add the line, if not included in the file. If the line is there, and your settings are not being saved you may have a corrupt prefs.js file.

Let me know what you find, and we can go from there.

    Ramona :D

    Hey your talking about me.:)

    Marjoh,

Good thing you posted here because Ramona can help you out better.

    Ramona,

I just looked and I don't have this line at all.
Or anyline that has " attachments " in it.

    user_pref( "mail.inline_attachments ", false);

    Yes, I do have: user_pref( "mail.inline_attachments ", false);

As I said, I have my Preferences set "as attachment" and have never changed it as you said you did. I was just checking and unchecking from with the opened mail and the inbox.

And yes, hewee, I was talking about you! Now I'm curious as to why you don't have that line and yours is working fine!!

The changes you make in Preferences should be saved.

It could be that your prefs.js file has become corrupt. You can rename the prefs.js file to prefs.old. When you restart Communicator a new prefs.js file will be created.

Note: you will need to re-enter your email preferences as well as any other preference settings you have, if you follow this procedure.

Let us know if you continue having problems.

I believe hewee uses an older Ver. of Netscape, and it could be that this particular preference line wasn't included in the file. Don't quote me on that, just an uneducated guess.

Just for reference, I use 4.7 and I don't have that line either.

    Ramona,

If your guess are "uneducated ", we're all in trouble! :D

O.K., this is the real deal, and no uneducated guessing going on!

    mail.inline_attachments
Controls whether Communicator displays attached files inline (directly in the message pane) or as links. The default is true , which is inline. Set to false to display only links. This preference is lockable, applies to Communicator 4.0 and later versions, and is available on all platforms.

Why Mike and hewee don't have this line in their prefs.js file remains a mystery to me.

Thank you for your help! It corrected another item I had forgotten about from a long while back. The links were always in black and are now blue. I wondered why they didn't show up in blue! Thanks again!

    OK all,

Mike I have 4.70 also, so lets see why we don't have that line.
I do have the java off for "JavaScript for mail and news ".
I keep it off all the time but with some people that use Outlook I have to close the email Enable it and open the email back up and click on the paperclip so I can have the option to right click the attachment and save it.
But after I am done I uncheck it again.
I just checked the prefs.js file after checking the "JavaScript for mail and news" and it was not there but I did not shut down Netscape to see if it would show up.

    Marjoh,

The links in blue is because you have the HTML checked. Can you write email it other fonts and colors?

    Mike,

I am going to shut down Netscape after this post to see what happens in the prefs.js file.

    EDIT:
Well that did not make the show up.

So Mike do we have a better version that no one else has?

    Hewee,

I have always had the HTML checked, but I know the links weren't in blue before I followed Ramona's instructions and renamed the prefs.js file. And, yes, I can write email in fonts and colors. Your 4.70 doesn't have the line and my 4.78 does? Odd?

    Hey hewee,

We must be two of the luckiest guys around! :D We must have that better version of 4.7 that nobody else does. BTW, I have Java on all the time.

    Marjoh,

I mean in the pass could you write emails in other fonts and colors?

Your 4.70 doesn't have the line and my 4.78 does? Odd?

Yea it is because "This preference is lockable, applies to Communicator 4.0
and later versions, and is available on all platforms." as Ramona posted.

That means we should have it.

    MinnesotaMike,

I guess we are lucky but you think I can change my Start menu?
I posted a link for you in that tread.
