I am useing ie6 with windows 98. Everything seems fine untill I click on a link to download a program. At a website when I click on the "Download" link, a new, blank page opens. I have tried several different pages, all open up a blank page and nothing downloads. Sending e-mail and serfing the web seems to go fine, I only have a problem if I try to download a program. What's wrong? Thank you, Chris.

Microsoft's Knowledge Base Article 299328 blames it on Go!Zilla. If you have Go!Zilla, that article should be of help.

If you don't have Go!Zilla installed, perhaps some other new, improved flavor of spyware is to blame.

Get, install and run Spybot to see if cleaning spyware off your system solves the problem.

    If not, post back.

    Hi

    >>I am useing ie6 with windows 98<

Thats not much to go on .
Do you use a download utility ?
How long have you had ie 6 ?
Copy and past the download site >link here so we can take a look
Do you have a spyware remover ?
Theres several free ones for home use --that dont nag to be registerd, but we should eventualy go ahead register them..

Have you right clicked on the download and selected save as ?
Have you had any success downloading anywhere >?

    Good luck :)

Email me at mflynn@lexcominc.net and I will reply and send you by attachment SpyBot, Adaware and BHO Demon to do the cleanups.

When you have this kind of undefined problem the first thing to do is cleanup. If this does not fix the problem and it could, then it cleans the slate for easier troubleshooting.

So to begin this cleanup before these programs I will send arrive.

Look in the add/remove and clean it up.

Remove anything that is there that you know you will never use.

Some of these things come bundled from the mfg to make you think you are getting sooo much software. Especially look for any thing relating to a Down loader like Download accelerator or Getright etc.

Download accelerator is a good program I use it but it could be damaged. Can be installed later. Getright has ad/spyware. So uninstall anything that has to do with downloading.

Once that is done do the following

    Start-run
    type

    cleanmgr /sageset:1

it will present a menu of items to cleanup select all except compress

    then

    start-run
    type

    cleanmgr /sagerun:1

    Finally do the below

Boot to DOS (not shutdown to DOS). While booting hit F8 to startup menu. Chose "command prompt only ".

    Type these commands

del c:\*.swp (may get file not found, is ok)
    del c:\windows\*.swp
    deltree c:\windows\shelli*.*
deltree c:\windows\temp\*.* (answer yes to all) "ALL "
    deltree c:\windows\tempor~1\*.*
    deltree c:\windows\history\*.*
    deltree c:\windows\spool\printers\*.*

Then reboot you should now be reasonably clean of temps etc.

Retest for problem and get back to us.

I tryed what the MS link said to do. Didn't get through it. It says to Delete, then do a search for it. It can't find it because it's deleted. Makes no sence. I tried to use my Maxblast to reformat and couldn't do that eather. This *****.

Ok do it your way then.

But out of curiosty when you uninstalled ie6 did it go back to 5.5? Or did you do something to really remove IE?

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 316537 said to make a note of the contents of the IE Plugins Extension key before deleting it so that you can find and rename the plugin file itself because, " If you do not complete this step, the file may recreate the registry key when you restart the computer. "

For example, here are the contents of an export I did of the Extension/.mov key awhile back:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Plugins\Extension\.mov]
    "Content Type "= "video/quicktime "
    "Version "= "1.1.0.0 "
    @= "QuickTime Plug-In "
    "Location "= "C:\\PROGRAM FILES\\NETSCAPE\COMMUNICATOR\\PROGRAM\\PLUGINS\\npqtw32.dll "

After deleting the Extension\.MOV key and rebooting, the key came back so I had to REname the file npqtw32.dll that was inside the C:\PROGRAM FILES\NETSCAPE\COMMUNICATOR\PROGRAM\\PLUGINS\ folder. In my case, the Netscape plugin was preventing IE5.5sp2 from opening .mov files. Bt renaming it and deleting the registry key, IE was able to open .mov files using the program I had associated with .mov files, Windows Media Player.

    can't download

Can you boot to c: ?(dos prompt)If so type scanreg/fix ,hit the enter key,and wait. Yes also try
Netscape browser if you have it.Of course you could re-install windows over top of your windowd98.
