Adaware 6.0 has been released. There are 3 levels, Personal, Plus and Professional. I still haven't received my email from them. Any other Plus users get their email from them for the upgrade?

At $26.95, I think they priced themselves out of the market. I've been without them for several weeks and have come to rely on SpyBot exclusively. They should re-think their re-entry strategy in view of the market competition. I'd pay $10 for the product but 2 1/2 times that is out of the question.

    Just my 2¢

Well it's free for Plus users. All I care about is getting the email so I can download it.

If you click on a download link for the
free standard edition of Ad-Aware 6
it informs you it will be available at the
    beginning of February :)

but as Zephyr pointed out I've come
    accustomed to being without it
and just using Spybot for now.
Didn't feel the need to download it again
since I just did a clean install.
But, you never know, always liked having
    both of them:p

I'm a registered user of ADAware Plus and have received no email about update.

I too have gone to Spybot.

I also use spywareBlaster and Spybot finds nothing because SpywareBlaster is running all the time and rejects the stuff before it gets to my computer.

However, I would like to get what I paid for from AdAware.:)

    comparison hits ad-aware 6 & spybot

Anyone compare spybot (with update) vs ad-aware 6
    count from ad-aware 6 -13 hits
    from Spybot (updated) 10 hits
included from ad-aware 6 that was missed by spybot was one
    gator.txt.
Anyone have similar findings ??

Adaware 6 is identifying files, folders and registry keys as spyware based on name alone so one possibility would be that gator.txt is a false positive.

"Warning: AA6 still uses name recognition "

As you all know, I've been testing it. I don't find any serious bugs that would cause a user probs with one exception. The likelyhood of F/Ps is HIGH. This could cause a user many probs. To clarify; all malware scanners will report F/Ps occasionally...this situation is much more pronounced.
I have tried changing names of known nasty files and AA missed every one of them. I created files/folders with common names like Gator. It targeted them as nasties.

I have been testing AA scanning process more extensively.

I created a no value reg key using the name lop placing it windows backup and AA snagged it as dangerous.

    From AA Log file
    "Lop.com Object recognized!
    Type : RegKey
    Data :
    Rootkey : HKEY_CURRENT_USER
    Object : Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Backup\ "

I then created a key with no value named BrowserEnh and AA identified it as GoHip.

    From AA Log file
    "GoHip Object recognized!
    Type : RegKey
    Data :
    Rootkey : HKEY_CURRENT_USER
    Object : Software\BrowserEnh "

I then saved an empty notepad file as cmeupd.exe and AA snagged it as Gator

    From AA Log file
    "Gator Object recognized!
    Type : File
    Data : cmeupd.exe
    Object : C:\
    FileSize : 0 KB
    Created on : 2/4/2003 10:39:26 AM
    Last accessed : 2/4/2003 10:39:57 AM
    Last modified : 2/4/2003 10:40:36 AM "

SBSD did not see any of these files as threats because they aren't obviously. Their lousy fakes.
    =============end c/p=================

A second posibility could be that your gator.txt is a pointer to a cookie...not even a real cookie, just a "shortcut" in the Temporary Internet Files that Spybot S&D won't find except along with all the other TIF entries that it lists as usage tracks.

    Mike,

Testing my computer skills to the limit, I have copied and pasted the AA6 quarantine entry below. It doesn't seem too informative to me but you may be able to make something of it.

It appears to be a cookie but not even a real one. It appears to just be an old pointer...if so, SSD would definitely not detect it.

PS I was having problems getting the link to the thread to work so you may have to look for the thread yourself in the "Spies" conference.

schamish--Alice is reporting factually what was posted on another forum, but unless you have been creating empty files/folders with the name gator, I think I would take AA's detection seriously.

    schamish,

Did Adaware or you save a backup copy of the gator.txt file so you can see what it contained? Possibly you had saved some notes on gator and created the file yourself? Without more details it's hard to say what was detected.
