If this post assists one person in resolving an IE6 problem, it is worth posting it.

Issue: On a COMPAQ w/ WinXP ... when attempting to access an update site from many application's menu, IE6 opens but does not complete the link. IE6 remains 'blank'. All attempts to set the proper Internet Options to default did not help; replacing certain *.dll files did not help; deleting and replacing IE6 did not help. Nothing I tried would allow me to access many of the update sites.

As a last desperation I invoked the "default option" when IE6 starts. As a rule, I only use Netscape as my web browser. Not that I do not like IE, it's only because of my many bookmarks that I rely on in NS. Everytime IE presented me with this "Do you want to make IE6 your default browser" I answered NO. Finally I elected to answer YES just to see if this had any impact.

Sure enough ... now when I select an update menu item from my many applications, IE6 opens up and takes me directly to the site.

It seems that many apps check to see if IE is the default browser before completing the link. If it is NOT ... no link. YES ... completes the link.

Go figure ... after many frustrating searches for an answer, the answer was as simple and confusing as saying "YES ".
